The provision under 16(5) creates an exception and says preference given to a person of particular religious denomination is allowed. It does not put a bar on the same, ma’am.

The Constitution might not have the provision for Acting president in case of vacancies in both the offices of President and the VP but according to The President (Discharge of Functions) Act, 1969 the CJI shall be acting president till appointment of President by election. Also this has happened once in India with President Zakir H's death and V. President V. V. Giri's resignation where J. Hidayatullah became acting president. Read up on this while watching the US tv show Designated Survivor.
