If both Dormer and Main Roof pitchs are the same, then you can get the distance you measured from the lath to dormer wall plate in this video, by simply hooking your tape measure on the Dormer Common Plumb Cut ,run the tape along the back of the rafter, past the Birds Mouth to where the its seat line meets the back of this rafter.

Hi Michael, great video! I'm a bit confused on how we get the edge cut on the jack rafters. I am clear by what you mean to generate the seat cut. But, the edge cut doesn't make sense. Did you say the pitch of the main roof minus 19? So, that would mean, if the roof was 27 degrees pitch then the edge cut should be 8? Just doesn't seem to make sense with the roof I am working on now, 8 degrees seems far to small an angle. Any advice would be really appreciated! Cheers

Hi Jack,glad you like the video, meant to say 90 degrees minus main roof pitch to set your skill saw agle at when cutting along the seat line to give the correct jack edge bevel. I inserted a note in to the video at 8.48 minutes making that point.

Good visualized video. It helps me a lot. But i have a question, why the valley jack rafter diminished is determined by the Centre to Centre Spacing and the pitch angle, which is (centre spacing) / Cos(Pitch) The spacing is on the horizontal plane view, but the diminsh distance is on the angled surfaced. I don't see they have relations to each other. Could do a visualized video on this as well? Thank you very much

hi Michael, if i wanted to put a bevel on the layboard would that be twice the backing bevel for the hip, thanks paul
@michaeldownes5162 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, its the full backing bevel/dihedral angle... between wide face and edge of lay board.... i will make a short video on this when i get a chance. Have it planed on first, before you mark out the lay board
