Awesome idea. This is a very old video of mine... I should revise it! It’s an important topic because doing it wrong can cost you tons of money! 😩 Thanks for watching.

Should I use geotextiles between the sand and the pit gravel

Hi im planning on building a 60m x 20m arena. The trouble is i cant put any drainage in as i hit the water table at only 2ft depth so putting in a soakaway would be a bit pointless by my thinking and the farmers field next door is level with my land. So im asking for advice on wether it could be possible to raise the arena up out of the ground would this help in anyway you think as im desperate for some pointers. I have 2 horse and a shetland pony so not alot of traffic so to speak.

Im trying to figure out what and how i should do my base and im leaning towards just grading the topsoil and putting the gravel on top so the arean will be somewhat elevated.

What's the difference between the pit gravel you refer to and stone dust?
@DeannaThompsonCorby
@DeannaThompsonCorby 6 жыл бұрын
Pit gravel is a red/golden color that will compact to almost 100% density. Stone dust is a grey color and WILL NOT compact very much. I believe stone dust is also referred to as “pea gravel”. Whatever you use as your base, it MUST compact to nearly 100% density. Thanks for watching and for your comment. ❤️

@@DeannaThompsonCorby I enjoyed the video. Just want to chime in with a correction that, while names of aggregates vary in different regions, stone dust is not pea gravel (Deanna is right that pea gravel doesn't compact, it is little round stones). Stone dust is called by many names, including screenings, and in our area (WI) is almost always limestone screenings, which do compact to a super hard layer and are used for most arena bases around here, including the large show facilities. We used quarter inch limestone screenings/stone dust for our base.

Did they owners add any drainage tiles?
@DeannaThompsonCorby

The owners surrounded the arena with 1-2” rocks and then surrounded the rocks with wood boards with drainage holes in them. It’s been 4 years and the arena is still working out perfectly. Read the book “Under Foot” by the USDF. I believe it’s available on www.usdf.org

I think the owners paid $25,000 for that space. That includes all materials and labor
