The main access road leading to the Tiko airport that was linked by a bridge has given way thus causing a lot of problems and putting both users of the bridge and those residing on either sides of it in a difficult and stressful situation. The bridge constructed since per-colonial period by the Germans purposely to link the Tiko airport which use to be the busiest airport in kameroun at that time, collapse on Wednesday morning.
Even though no lives were lost during the collapse of the bridge since it was in the hay hours of Wednesday morning (between 1 to 2AM), the old state of the bridge has been linked as the root cause of its collapse. The German built bridge constructed since 1948 is situated at the Tiko roundabout directly opposite the Tiko council and served as entry and exit routes to students going to schools, CDC workers and was even the main road leading to the residence of the Mayor of Tiko council.
Ashu Constance a resident of Combe’s quarter situated on the other side of the bridge told this reporter that they only woke up in the morning and saw that the linking bridge had collapse. She however thinks that the collapse might be link to the vibrations emanating from the heavy duty machines of the SATOM construction company that was carrying out rehabilitation work on the Douala-Tiko-Limbe highway.
The unfortunate accidents as she described it really handicaps their activities as school students and workers have to spend a lot of time going round to use the Likomba bridge, a sister to this one constructed during the same period.
In a brief exchange with this reporter, the Mayor of Tiko council, Moukondo Daniel Ngande, who was forced to go round before getting to his office that Wednesday morning affirmed that he had personally used that bridge at pass midnight and it was in good shape. He explained that he was however taken by surprise when he was informed of the unfortunate incident.
Quiz on what the council had in mind about the bridge so as to liberate the population from the predicament they are currently facing, Mayor Moukondo Daniel of the SDF led council who equally doubles as a traditional ruler pointed out that when the council was alerted of the incident, preventive measures were taken so as to ensure that no one falls into the hole by surprise.
This he added was complemented by him writing an official report of the incident to his hierarchy including the Divisional officer for Tiko. But he ever explained to the dismay of the population that the council cannot carry out any works or try to repair the bridge because it was constructed purposely for the airport before the settlement of the denizens in the area. This he said could only be carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
It should be noted that as the South West regional capital, Buea, prepared to host the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Cameroon the said bridge was rehabilitated including the road leading to the airport. Reports have it that, that was the road the head of state was to use after landing from the Tiko airport but mischievously, President Biya who is complemented for his foresightedness at the last minute decided to use another road. Only God knows what would have happened if he used that road and a similar incident like this occurs. At press time, denizens were reported to be acquainting themselves to the recent happening as it is feared that the bridge might take years to be re-constructed as is commonly done in Cameroon.
