Amazing job but why did the video cut out so abruptly? I can't tell is this 3x40 one direction and another 3x40 the other direction or was the other side just 2x40? I would like to use one of the half pipe like roof coverings they make and do the bottom story containers, I think the roof cover is a 40x45 so that would make the it 5 containers 1st story and then the second would be the same size only just the tall rounded metal topper however this is larger then I need or want I think it's like 3200 sq ft so I was Hoping they make a smaller topper either way I think this is a great way to go as it eliminates the water issues being a fully covers roof and it add alot of extra sq footage. Anyway this house you have built is amazing. Outstanding job, thanks for sharing!

It depends on your local city/county/country. For example some cities in France(where I live) don't allow shipping container houses because of their cubic shape. Others don't allow 3 stories houses, some ask for a certain color of exterior walls . . . I think there some urbanism rules like this everywhere in the world !
@jinxc22817 жыл бұрын
Emmanuel Roblin good to know.. thank you
@jamesooten36595 жыл бұрын
Jinx C + It depends. If you live in an area with a year round warm climate, you could use pretty much any insulation. But if you live in a seasonal area, you have to use spray foam to prevent moisture condensation on the metal. With the risk of moisture condensation on the metal eventually causing mold and mildew, I'd err on the side of caution and just use spray foam regardless of where you live. Just be sure to give it plenty of time to cure and out-gas before putting up any walls so that you don't have a long-term smell issue or health concerns with toxic fumes.

Question- Why did you poor concrete floors after placing the containers?
@camerakid767 жыл бұрын
The flooring in containers are treated and HIGHLY toxic. They need to be sealed in however you choose to do it. Vapor barrier and subfloor, concrete, etc. You don't want to breath in the fumes that the container flooring will give off over time in your house.
@keithhoward40695 жыл бұрын
@@camerakid76They are just plywood on metal. How hard would it be just to put new wood down? then flooring or carpet or even faux tile.
@camerakid765 жыл бұрын
Keith Howard You can pull it out and replace, but it’s something like 1” dense plywood supertreated against rot and critters. It runs flush with the steel frame of the container so you’d still have to build up a subfloor of some type over the steel beams to run your flooring edge to edge.
@keithhoward40695 жыл бұрын
@@camerakid76 just cut it right at the wall and install the flooring you desire onto the steel sub frame(screw or if metal weld it right to the frame). I seriously doubt the small amout remaining would be a hazzard. If done right, you could have an even better, stronger floor that would still leave the structure easily transportable. A concrete slab must be much more costly, and makes plumbing and electric more difficult. But It does make for a real solid foundation.
@johnstrom27212 жыл бұрын
@@camerakid76 The interior of shipping cubes have a manifest/history of the materials shipped inside them and you get toxic vs non-toxic. The wood on the flooring isn't a one-size-fits-all and some are completely untreated. Regardless the history of the flooring, it's absolutely advisable to put subflooring over the existing material and then whatever flooring is chosen.

I don't know if this is accurate, but I've generally priced this for a 4 container house completely off-grid. -Any experts weigh in? 5 acre parcel $10,000.00 Foundation/Level $10,000.00 Four 40' containers $12,000.00 Basic buildout $10,000.00 Composting toilet $01,000.00 Solar System $08,000.00 Containers $10,000.00 Water Storage $07,000.00 Estimate $68,000.00 This is nothing fancy; wood studs, insulation, wiring, basic floors/ceiling. Small windows, etc. If you can build on a lot with utilities, you could scratch $15k or so for systems.
@perpetualmotion80904 жыл бұрын
I wish someone would answer this
@BStrambo3 жыл бұрын
@@perpetualmotion8090 Sure, the land cost shouldn't be on there since that can vary so widely. Can a 4 container home be built with $68k in materials 100% DIY, maybe, but that would require a whole lot of labor, tools (plasma cutter, welder?) and knowledge as well as a lot of time spent trying to source materials so cheap. The $10k "basic buildout" line for example is absurd. 4 containers is over 1200sf of space. Window and door package alone would be $5k+ unless it is all from Restore. Plumbing (rough and fixtures), electrical (rough and fixtures), framing, insulation, wall covering, flooring, HVAC, cabinets/counters. Also need to consider permits. The most economical thing a person could do is build a single 40' high cube container home for about $20k in materials assuming it is nearly 100% DIY and on remote land with no zoning/permits. Times that by 2.5-3x for a contractor to do it.

This seems utterly pointless. You're still framing and insulating, you're still building a foundation and pouring slabs, and you're still framing and building a roof.
@christianvoluntaristsurvival6 жыл бұрын
my thoughts too. if i ever get the chance to build a container home i'm only framing and insulating the exterior walls. not doing any framing and drywall on the interior walls or ceiling. to me, the point of a shipping container home is to build it cheap, use recycled materials, and STILL LOOK AND FEEL LIKE A SHIPPING CONTAINER. i'd still have to build a sloped roof but it would be a METAL roof like on a typical METAL shop building to finish off the industrial look... plus it's cheaper than wood framing, plywood, felt-type-roofing-underlay and then shingles or METAL ROOFING on top of all that! understand that when you join shipping containers it pretty much becomes a requirement to build a roof. you've left no place for the rainwater to go. it will just puddle and rust the container.

Nine 40 foot containers, will build a house that is 48x40x17 feet, with a clear span area of 24x40 feet (without cutting any holes). Cutting holes for access greatly increases useful space, but the containers are only 8 feet wide, so those rooms are rather small. Costs about $31,500 depending on location and availability of containers. Cutting larger holes in the side walls, greatly reduces the support capability longitudinally.
