I study x-ray, i'm not even that interested in this stuff but my adhd decided to watch this and now I'm absolutely fascinated. I'm also thinking about how cool of a video game this would be, like a mobile game, where you have to load up truck by colour coordinating the truck colour with container colour and managing multiple ships coming in and out and having to move around stacks of containers to make room for move containers moving in and having to manage the in and out of containers on ships and trucks.

Thank you for this explanation. My only comment is that it would be very unusual for an inbound truck to drop a loaded outbound 40' container and then load 2 x 20' inbound reefer containers since these would likely be loaded containers. Highway weight limitiations in the USA restrict the weight bearing capacity to haul 2 loaded reefers on a single chassis. Also depending on the reefer type you may not be able to move 2 loaded reefers because the generator type may not be configured to do this. (belly mount vs nose mount reefer generators) Lastly, unless you were planning to lift the containers off of the chassis for unloading you could at most only unload the rearmost container at a dock and could not monitor nose mounted reefer controls due to the lack of space between the 2 containers. This is why hauling 2 x 20' loaded reefers is not done. It may also be useful to note that only anysizer chassis are capable of hauling a 40 and combination of 2 x 20' containers. these are not the most common type of chassis and are usually only owned by private carriers not pool chassis providers. Further, anysizer chassis don't claim to be able to handle 2 x loaded 20' containers. Your examples are good for basic port understanding but the complexities of chassis matching are a major issue that is being downplayed and might make a very useful addition to this operations overview.

Why does this animation show a reach stacker lifting empties? I thought there were separate vehicles specifically for empty container handling? Can you explain the difference between ECH, loaded container handler, and reach stacker usage?
@learnlogistics
@learnlogistics 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, reach stackers can/will also be used in smaller port to move empties - the larger the port the more specialized the equipment will be. If you have a large enough port to justify the purchase of more equipment you may buy/lease some ECH as they are cheaper than stack reacher. But if do not have enough volume to keep the ECH busy most of the time you will prefer a stack reacher due to its polyvalence and capability of handling empties and loaded. And even smaller port may only used a heavy duty forklift and a larger one may rely more on gantry cranes and container chassis, not even using ECH or stack reachers. Hope this helps. We do have a short course on ports here: allynintlcatalog.trainlearngrow.com/product/how-ports-work/ and if you use the coupon you10, you can get it with 10% off.

Not in this simple version, would have been overload - but you are correct than many containers could be delivered to the yard via train - offloaded in the yard by cranes and then move to quay side or vice versa in a similar manner than the animation shows.

Does each container handling/process (storing place, storing time etc.) follow strict and repetable protocol, of is it affected by human behavior?
@learnlogistics
@learnlogistics 2 жыл бұрын
Both - in larger automated ports, it will be strongly process driven [automated] whereas in smaller ports it may be down to a individual human deciding where each container will be stored. Outside factors such as a container being selected for a customs inspection may also be linked to human behavior (spot control) and may impact your otherwise systematic process. Or a container may be damaged during its transport and an individual may be called in to evaluate and decide to where the container should be sent / next steps. Hope that helps.
@alfredyt
@alfredyt Жыл бұрын
I would say that is done all manually. For instance, many terminals in Europe doesn't allow cargo without customs clearance at the yard. According to Port of Discharge, type of container, or even transhipments, the stacking of containers is done considering those factors, there are more but just for the sake of explaining. There are automatic cradle carriers picking up containers from the yard, but thats all.
