Hi Gaurev - this video distilled cloud computing and virtualization well! I have used some of these concepts before - ( e.g. requesting VMs configured with specific OS flavors, RAM, CPU, and Disk Space ), but did not understand why this was done till now. I also appreciate the landlord-rent analogy for cloud-computing

One of the core features of docker is the use of layering. Really a docker image is a bunch of layers added on top of another that can be reused and that speeds the start time of the container for use for other times and if you know how to utilize this feature of layering you will get faster and smaller also containers.

Yeah it’s sometimes easier to just run the app directly on the operating system, but Docker-Compose scaling is there too, internal load balancing, and of course the development benefits of build once run everywhere, easier to write CI/CD. The benefits kinda outweigh the disadvantages in my opinion. Unless you want pure performance out of your application, which is rarely a case as Uptime and scaling is usually more important.

Since servers from the cloud provider has an upper limit on resources, such as CPUs/memories, if I want a bigger virtual instance which exceeds the upper limit of a single server of the cloud provider, could I still get the virtual instance? I think no. Virtualization can only segregate a single server, it can not aggregate servers to create a more powerful virtual instance, right? So when software/app is migrated to cloud, they could only scale out, not scale up. Maybe software architecture needs also be adjusted, is it right?

I got a question in my mind. Why do we need Java with JVM if we can deploy an application in a container to any operating system? The phrase "Write once run everywhere" is no longer seems reasonable. Why do we need to use any language that uses VM?
@gkcs3 жыл бұрын
The virtual machine does more than platform independence. It allows run time code optimisations, compiler optimisations, etc... It's also a very light weight VM. Containers provide a level of isolation that is more intense than the JVM.
