Eek, I didn't get the notification for this comment! 😕 Hopefully you're still around!! A purl stitch looks like a knit stitch on the other side, and vice versa. So if your work is facing you and you do a purl stitch, then you flip your work over, the same exact stitch will look like a knit stitch. This might help you troubleshoot what you're seeing. Also, be careful when you insert your needle that it is on the correct side of the other needle -- right needle behind the left for knit and right needle in front of the left for purl. I hope this helps!!

Thx! My only feedback for everyone making knitting videos is to start with a quick demonstration at the beginning of the video showing what you will teach preformed fluently, then at the beginning of each section a demo of what that section looks like fluently. Then you can go back and do each thing with all the explaining and exaggerated movements. That way people can try it from just watching quickly, and if they need more then there's more instruction available. Everyone seems to be very inclusive with explaining that there are many ways to do everything, so a quick demo will make it clear exactly what your method is, then we can copy it, or if it's not what we're looking for then that's good to know quickly too,

As a long time crocheter who is just learning how to knit, I really like this method and prefer it to the English style where I am throwing the yarn with my right hand. I feel this would be much less awkward since I hold the yarn and keep tension w my left hand during crochet much the same way. Thanks for the vid.

You are so welcome! I definitely had a MUCH easier time learning to knit this way. English style was very hard for me. I have a video with tips for people learning to knit when they already know how to crochet. The link is below, in case you think that might be helpful for you. In some ways, knowing how to crochet made learning to knit harder! Good luck! 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aImaoql4qcubgJo

EXCELLENT tutorial... I am an avid knitter and learned almost 50 years ago! I have developed very painful arthritis in my right thumb which is devastating to me as after I knit, my thumb hurts for days. I do know how to continental knit but wanted to see how others do it. Trying to develope a pain free knitting method.

Hi, Sandy! I hope this knitting method helps with your pain. ❤️ I have arthritis in my knees and it flares up this time of year. I'm definitely not qualified to give medical advice, so please check with a doctor, but there is a supplement that I get on Amazon that has helped my pain tremendously. It is called Zahler Inflame-X. I take 2 twice a day for most of the year and 3 twice a day when my symptoms get bad. Good luck!

What about casting on.
@craftglad
@craftglad 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! I hope I'm understanding your question correctly. There are lots and lots of ways to cast on, but I'd recommend learning the long tail cast on method when you're first starting out, especially if you find continental knitting and holding the yarn in your left hand easier than holding it in your right hand. You should be able to find video tutorials for that method pretty easily, but I will add casting on to my list of video ideas. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question. Thank you for taking the time to comment! 🙂

You're the 1st one to say about those 2 stitches and how not to go into them. Even in the books they don't say about that. Too late for me now. After many screams and tears and knitting needles stuck in walls, I figured it out for myself. I couldn't understand why there were more and more stitches on my needles after casting on! Still Lesson for teachers of knitting?! Thankyou for your slow and thorough guidance!😊

I didn't realise there are so big differences in continental knitting, the way of doing it! In Finland I had only ever seen the way we are taught and I was in my 30s when I first saw someone knitting with holding yarn in their right hand. Like we have the left index finger touching the knitting needle, not raised in any way. This probably explains why so many Americans also crochet with their index finger raised off from other fingers.

Dear Amanda! I wanted to say huge tank you for these videos and breaking everything to small steps and explaining how it works. I learned to knit one year ago from youtube, but I am very slow and actually i hold and maneuver needles and yarn in a very primitive way. I was trying to learn continental from other tutorials but I still could not get it. It was feeling so awkward and I didn't understand what I was doing wrong! It is only with your videos that I finally made progress. I still need to practice to be more efficient, but thanks to you I am on a good path. Thank you and greetings form Poland!

Its really hard because its tight. Should i cast on lighter?
@craftglad
@craftglad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Emma! If it is hard to get your needle in the stitches, then yes, your tension is too tight. For me, when I was learning, I had this problem mainly with the cast on stitches. Maybe try doing those a little more loosely. Just wondering, do you already crochet? Sometimes that can actually hinder your progress when you're learning to knit, especially with tension. I have a video with tips for how to knit if you already crochet, if you're interested. Even if you don't crochet, there's a section in that video about your tension being too tight. Good luck! Don't give up, and let me know if you have more questions. 🙂
