We are going to build 10 floor beams and start working on the next 3. We go through the material choices and why.
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on KZbin. While we are still sailing, our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

When I worked on repairing swimming pools we would sometimes use the non slip mats that go under area rugs. We used a 6'x10' so it had a lot of surface area. They looked like rubber mesh and though they won't get you put the vertical part of the hull, they will get you up to about 50 degrees. They are relatively inexpensive too.

Malin, to have a footrest when sanding the insides, hang two ropes over the side, 1-2 meters apart, tie a beam in between the two ropes and you can stand on that beam. By adjusting the length of the ropes, you can adjust how high up on the hull you will stand.

Sapele is one of my favourite timbers. We use it for cabinets & exterior doors. The natural ribbon striping is beautiful. It machines really well compared to the other African mahoganies. It is definitely the best replacement for the South American mahogany. Almost as dimensionally stable as well, which makes it good for doors & keel grids.

Awesome. Put it higher. It will give better results. The ideal is at the center of the scanned area. In this case you can put it at 150-170 cm from the floor. Those 1-2 mm at the left and right small gaps that I can see are because of this.

The layout, wood selection , glue up is very interesting. I’m interested in all the details because i can use some of your techniques to different projects I have on the go. I find planning is the most critical part of any project I’ve taken on, and when I look back at past projects I’ve always found that carefully planning would have prevented problems and resulted in a superior finished project.

Find a piece of mattress foam or foam from a seat cushion to stand on for grip. It’s what is used when working on a roof. It also protects the surface you’re working on.

For interior slippy sanding - a movable leveling platform might be very useful. 18mm ply with a step on inboard bottom to make a walkway. Rubber grip on the step bottom and edge of the ply protects the hull surface and locks it down with weight on it!

Everything looking terrific. Question, the limber holes seem a bit small? Any reason they can't be larger? Tiny liber holes can easily get clogged from my experience.

10:39 Try butyl tape under your shoes... that might help quite a bit longer then a few minutes... Also sanding from bottom to top may prevent small amounts of fiber glass/resin dust from making the surface more slippery...

Love the keel grid, but the limber holes need to be way bigger. I’d glass in a short piece of fiber glass tube cut in half under the keel grid, so any water can run freely, and the wood is completely sealed.

I think you made the right choice. You are not building an Imoca for the Ocean Race built for weight reduction and at the limit of what is doable. You built a boat to cruise the world with the safety of you family as a top priority.

Timber prices. You can get some fairly cheap wood without going for fast/new growth pine but it's no where near as good as sapele or oak. For instance beech is almost half the price. I have a small amount of red heart timber I'd like to integrate into a boat I plan on starting next spring. I have no idea what to do with it. It would be a shame to hide that beautiful grain behind fibreglass, but I don't really have enough to use it for cabinatry and furnishings.

New Subscriber -- QUESTION -- You guys are doing a great job! Regarding fibreglass, we always thought that sailboats were several inches of solid fibreglass, but notice that you (and most other builders) use only 1 or two layers. Is one layer as strong as many layers so there is no real advantage in going thick? What is going on, is it simply a cost issue or is there basically no real advantage of going thick? (not sure why I was unsubscribed but youtube cut off my subscription to your channel???)

Your cost on various species of wood seem very high so I am wondering if this is due to tariffs/taxes/shipping? I've been around boat building since the 1950s as a child when mahogany was pretty common. Species I am familiar with are "Honduras" , "Cuban", and "African". We rarely saw African Mahogany. Back in the day Cuban Mahogany was preferred but was scarce due to use in cigar boxes. After the revolution it became almost impossible to find when the sources for repair work were boats being cut up, furniture and occasional tree found in Florida. Using what you have in stock makes good sense and the more dense the better.

Why not use plywood? Would it not be cheaper but stronger?
@RANSailing

Plywood have half of the grain in opposite direction of what we need in this case, so it would have been a lot heavier to get the same strength. And quality plywood is very expensive too… 😊 Cheers!

It's really no biggie having slightly heavier timber in the keep grid at the bottom of the boat, quite aside from the strength question the weight is in the right place in the boat.
