Thank you for explaining and demonstrating so clearly as I struggled to wrap my head around exactly what I was being asked to do. I did however find the background music rather distracting when I was trying to to listen to you. Many thanks

Hey I just finished this exercise and the book said to draw slowly just like the pure contour drawing exercise. I find myself drawing broad sketchy strokes like yours and then slowing myself down when I noticed what I was doing so I guess it was conflicting to stop my L side from taking over. Plus being unable to get the same hand position bugged me since I marked on the paper the points from the picture plane. The whole experience was a doozy all n all, thanks for sharing yours.

this is by far the most frustrating exercise in the book, for the same reasons you mentioned. I just cannot get my hand in the same position as in the picture plane. I'm thinking of skipping using the picture plane and going directly to the part where you pose your hand and draw what you see

GO for it! It's all good practice. Best wishes.

This exercise is really hard for me, I get super anxious trying to get everything right and I still haven't been able to do it after a few days. This video and the comments motivated me, thank you! PS: I think I'll skip the picture plane and just draw my hand, trying to follow it just distracts me from drawing what I see on my hand

I did the same. It over-complicated the whole process for me, plus making the planar window is added physical effort away from drawing and my brain doesn't like work. And now I'm trying to fill one of my sketchbooks with nothing but hand drawings. It's nice to see them get better and better each time.

I am in the same chapter, and I am getting some headaches trying to keep my other eye closed. I am listening to the audio book of drawing on the doming eye by Betty Edwards too, and there is no mention on that issue. Did you experience the same? Did someone else experience something similar? I was thinking about using something to cover the other eye just to avoid the extra effort.
@prattcreekart Жыл бұрын
do you mean the dominant eye? I dont remember that part. but mainly the author is trying to get us to make left logical brain drop out. covering the eye seems like a good idea. also try a little meditation beforehand to clear the mind

from a picture frame. be careful. if the edges are sharp, cover with tape to protect from cuts.

Thank you for the input. I am working on an updated video about the viewfinder and will try to address some of the issues people are having. Now that I have used it more, I have more to say.

Honestly, how is this any different from tracing ?
@prattcreekart3 жыл бұрын
Maybe one didn't explain it well. Contour is the outline so thee just focus on that instead of all details as thee could do with tracing. So yeah, similar but focused on the edges of the object being traced. Good question. Thanks.
@sn4pdr4g0ns3 жыл бұрын
Tracing is a great way to learn how to draw and build your visual memory library. Don't discount tracing as a learning exercise. So many people think it's a bad thing and it's just not. It's another way of practice: how to see, observe, and create shape, and see how shapes relate to other shapes. Of course if you're tracing someone else's work and passing it off as your own, that's when it's not good 😂

if you're going to do a demo I think you should prepare better and do a better job. messy toning, inaccurate drawing on viewfinder and talking while drawing which goes against Betty Edwards L/R brain theory. I'm a drawing teacher , I tried using this video. just some feedback.

Thanks for the tips. The voiceover was done over the drawing video after I finished. Notice I do not call this a "How to" video because I am a drawing student myself sharing my experience with this exercise. I appreciate all tips and insight.
