Maybe it sounded that way when originally composed. That was peak of hair/glam metal then so original composer probably made a demo on real instruments. It's much easier to compose that way than on 8-bit tracker software.

Nice work.. That made me realize, how creative old game designers were, they actually design whole sound track in 8bit sound.

They just didn't design it. The programmed the entire fucking thing, note by note under severe limitations The NES, on which Contra was released had 5 sound channels for sound The 1st and 2nd generate square waves, and handle synth most of the time. The 3rd is the triangle. It handles bass, but can also be pitchbent to thicken drums The 4th is the noise channel and generates hisses. Usually used to generate drums, but in this game, it generates footsteps and soundfx The DPCM channel uses real recorded sound. In this game, it used for orchestra hits and drums. In reality it can record anything you want If you want to hear really good long nes music, listen to the main menu of the Game solstice. It starts of slow, but then blows your brain 30 seconds in. Silver Surfer is an equally amazing as well
