I got to play one of these when I was shopping for my intermediate flute! The contrabass flute I played was really easy to get the sound out, even easier than the alto flute I played 6 months prior

Yeah. The contrabass has a very relaxed embrochure. It should be much more relaxed than alto and bass flute playing for sure. 🙂

My dad only plays the regular concert flute in C, piccolo, alto flute and bass flute. He was a studio musician who played all the clarinets, saxophones and flutes and oboe.

I remember learning (and struggling) to handle the contrabass clarinet at music college, and a colleague advising to "think as low as you can". That did it -- then I could play it!

When I tried the subcontra a NFA all Eva Kingma said to me was "normal flute embouchure" and I quickly made a good sound. Now, I don't know what she would have said to me had that first instruction resulted in too tight an embouchure for the instrument, but all this "you need to relax your embouchure for low flutes" I don't like. At the very least this depends how you play C flute to begin with. That said at WIFF when showing the contra to kids, the first kid could not make a sound and I could not help her. One of the other players in our club who does contra told her to forget about having an embouchure completely and just pretend she's blowing on a bottle, and just like that she made a sound, so it's not so simple. Both schools of thought may have their place.

I've got a C foot, B foot, Alto, Bass, and a Piccolo. I certainly don't need a Contra Bass. But BOY HOWDY, I want a Contra Bass flute. I could take it to a BART Station and busk, in all that vaulted, concrete. Just the thought makes my hair stand on end.

As a composer, I'm really wondering about the specific musical potentials of the contrabass flute. Is the tone in the low register strong enough to be used in ensembles other than flute choirs? I wondering how telling it'd be e.g. in an orchestra doubling the cello section. Also, I was interested to hear you play phrases of reasonable length. Knowing how much more breath this takes than a C flute, how long a phrase is possible compared to the C flute?

Dig this; the lowest flute is the C hyperbass flute, which is 4 octaves lower than the C standard concert soprano flute, 3 octaves lower than the C bass flute, 2 octaves lower than the C contrabass flute & an octave lower than the C double contrabass flute, or sub contrabass flute. Amazing, isn’t it?

That’s a subcontra bass flute, I suggest you look at flute bands from Northern Ireland, in these bands you have picc g treble concert alto bass contra bass subcontra bass and double subcontra bass. Check out Eva Kingma flutes, by the was in LA there is a flute group that has a double subcontra bass flute.

Normally sinks, toilets, and baths work better if we leave the plumbing in the walls. This flute is about as cheesy in gimmicky as the flute scene in LA.
