Contractile vacuoles are defined by their behaviour of slowly filling with fluid and periodically expelling this fluid from the cell.
Contractile vacuoles form one part of a more extensive organelle, the contractile vacuole complex.
Contractile vacuole complex (CVC) typically includes
the contractile vacuole,
a system of membranous elements called the spongiome and
a permanent pore supported by cytoskeletal structures. Algal flagellate cells typically contain one or two CVC's.
They lie in the vicinity of the flagellar bases, and discharge their contents at fIxed points in the surface of the cell.
Discharge of vacuolar contents forms one part of a recurring cycle of behaviour.
This incorporates two major phases, filling or diastole, and expulsion (contraction) or systole.
Diastole usually terminates with the rounding up of the vacuole.
During the systole the vacuole appears to fuse with the plasma membrane, and disappears from view as its contents are lost....
