Hi everyone! Let's paint a Dwarfen Mountain Holds Lord/Thane for Warhammer: The Old World using Contrast paints and a few tricks.
Materials:
Grey Primer, (Ace Hardware)
Airbrush (Iwata Eclipse)
Rosemary and Co series 99 sable brushes, sizes 2, 1, 0
Vallejo Game Color: Black, White, Bonewhite
Citadel Contrast: Darkoath Flesh, Dark Angels Green, Gore-Grunta Fur, Skeleton Horde, Wyldwood, Basilicanum Grey
Citadel Base/Layer: Iron Hands Steel, Runelord Brass, Retributor Armour, Kislev Flesh, Pink Horror, Jokaero Orange, Warpstone Glow, Moot Green, Eshin Grey, Dawnstone, Stormhost Silver
Citadel Shade: Carroburg Crimson, Nuln Oil, Agrax Earthshade, Seraphim Sepia
Basing materials:
Rhinox Hide, Mournfang Brown, Balor Brown
Wood Glue
Fine sand
Super Glue
Static Grass

Again and again I come back to your channel for ideas to use both contrast and acrylics to paint because I find you can't just use one or the other - and here you are doing exactly that. Thanks for watching! I agree, Dwarfs are tough to find color schemes for. I think it just comes down to them being mostly metals. Kind of hard to do much with that. So I like to use bright colors on some areas that would normally be metal. Good way to bring extra color to the model.

This almost makes me want to bust out my old dwarfs, but there are too many other projects on the go right now. Also, they are the really old citadel dwarfs that look like bowling balls with beards and not the newer WFB sculpts. Also, it's nice to see that I'm not the only one who paints the underside of their minis black even though its likely never to be seen. Thanks Mr. Matt.

Super impressive. How did you manage to get that smooth transition on the axe using your armor wash? Multiple coats?

Thanks! Yeah I added a couple more coats to the axe. I forgot to record that part so it didn't make it into the video. Just keep shading until it gets as dark as you want, then "polish" the highlight side back up with the basecoat, and then edge with stormhost silver.

Can I ask about your brush? What size are you using? What do you look for in a brush to determine if it will be long lasting?

I use Rosemary and Co series 99 and 33 brushes, sizes 2, 1, and 0. Series 33 is Kolinsky sable which lasts longer and has a finer point than the red sable in series 99. I use the 99's for nearly everything, and I usually reserve the more expensive 33s for the finest detail work only (eyes, etc). Some paints are harder on the brushes than others. In my experience, the 99's are such an affordable price that I don't worry too much about it. I don't use brush soap; just water. I get the most life out of my brushes by assigning/promoting them to new roles: The newest brushes get used for the most important detail work. Once the point starts to go, they get "promoted" to edge highlights. Then they get promoted to basecoats/contrast. After that, they get promoted to drybrushing, and then finally glue/basing. I try to use the oldest/worst condition brush possible for each job, and by doing that it also extends the life of all my other brushes.

Is the prime coat white or light grey ? You say white in the video but I see grey primer in the description

Its grey spray paint from a can, followed by a couple "zenithal style" passes of white with my airbrush. The final result is kind of a light grey, subtle zenithal style prime. Not quite pure white, but I like it more than just plain grey.

Yes that's correct. You could use a white spray primer instead of an airbrush
