Traditionally in a lot of similar cultures, dances like these were reserved for only women to witness. These dances were supposed to entice men, so they were either done by wives for their husbands in private, during women only gatherings (to have fun and also swap moves for their own husbands), or by concubines and the like for those that pay or have ownership over them. Mostly during the women’s gatherings though.

I just adore this artform! I saw it once, & I just thought it was so mesmerizing & I wanted to do it. I wasn't an overweight little girl, but I was approaching that (unbeknownst to me, I was very young). I was bad at sports & uninterested. I was/am a writer/performer, but dancing wasn't my specialty. THIS, however, looked amazing. I was out shopping with my mother & I saw this package at a Barnes & Noble. It had pamphlets, instructional videos, basically this whole beginner's guide to belly-dancing. I was psyched! I remember excitedly showing my mom & pleading with her to get it. I then remember her promptly shutting me down. I argued, but like practically every child when a parent's mind has been made up, my voice fell on deaf ears. It was one of those moments that you don’t realize as a girl will shape you as a woman. I understood the money piece; we couldn't afford it that day. In hindsight, we probably could have stretched a bit, but I don't know for sure. The issue was that THAT was NOT the issue, affording it. My mother sternly insisted it was inappropriate. I don't quite remember my rebuttal. I just recall that I was extremely upset, frustrated, disappointed. It didn't matter how I went about doing what I'd love... if I were alone, fully clothed (as I very much intended to be), learning purely for fun, dancing my recitals for a party of only one, in the form of our sweet, loyal dog. I'd still be too young. I'd soon learn it would be taboo, anyway, whether I was 8 or 28. My body was inappropriate. I was never going to grow out of my own skin... Anyway, this is still such a beautiful, enchanting style of dance! It's breathtaking & you perform it gorgeously! ✨️🌌🪷🕯🥂🕯🪷🌌✨️

@@youtubecommentergal4346 Thank you for your kind words🖤 I love my mother with all my heart. It was one of those instances that, to me, demonstrates how women are taught, directly or indirectly, that it's their bodies that ought to bear shame for nakedness as if nakedness is shameful & as if in that tale, Adam did not also bite the apple. Many attest to Jesus' proclamation that if a man's lust is so incurable, he should pluck out his own eyes. Yet, sins of the eyes or the flesh committed against women & girls have always been our cross to bear. Looking back, my mother was only trying to protect me. I'm not sure what her line of thinking was, but the conclusion became "not causing a scene", while still convincing me that this was for adults. Now, at 20, with a little sister just about 10 yrs. younger, I just feel that sending our daughters into battle with shields, social standards they mustn't break, & the commandment to watch for predators who are always watching you, is long overdue for an upgrade. Neither sex should see the world as a war zone, but until most of those with my anatomy stop being hunted for having my anatomy, most of us will. So, I will dance & sing & write & act. I will wear dresses & fishnets & platform boots with spikes, & dark makeup. I will dye my hair & chase my dreams. I think of my full get-up as my armor, but in my jewelry & liberation, I carry a sword. I will not cater to the perverts of this world by being easy on their eyes. If their eyes are so troublesome, perhaps they could do without them, anyway.

@@youtubecommentergal4346✨️Note✨️ I'd LOVE to take lessons for a lot of things, especially this!!! Unfortunately, what freedom I spoke of is rather strictly spiritual at the moment. It wasn't always. I've been ill for some time, but in recent years, it's gotten so bad, most days I can't leave my house at all. My pride & joy is my fluffy son. I pour all of my strength & energy into caring for him, keeping him happt. If I've got any left over, physically it's a "good" day. I'm hoping to get better soon. At least enough to live again & follow my aspirations. The BEST belly-dance performance I, a woman, have viewed/enjoyed in my LIFE occurred when a veilded beauty approached our table towards the end of a meal at a North Vancouver Greek Food restaurant. I was seated with my cohabiting lover (a man) and, if I recall correctly, another couple: a work buddy ~ with HIS future wifu ~ and HIS friend a rather rotund and HILARIOUS, freekishly intelligent man who we met THAT NIGHT. Vancouver is an incredible "foodie" yet this food afficinado kindly introduced us to a myriad of alternative hidden gems he had ferreted out. The BEST food and the most highly entertaining experiences are to be found in these resturants were certainly NOT the popular places but the "mom and pop" venues which had far more AUTHENTIC family recipes... I, personally, had no idea there MIGHT be entertainment, but I was DELIGHTED when I heard the music and saw her sensuous grace. I love BEAUTY and I was NOT offended as she played to my love (in particular) as her FLASHING eyes above her (many sheer and one opaque veils) were PLAYFUL and inclusive...but the other young woman was visibly and increasingly upset for the performance was incredibly sensual.. The men ~ my man in particular ~ were increasingly...focused on her lithe and beautiful body...but she kept periodically reassuring me (non verbally) that I was included in this performance...and I simply surrendered to her seductive movements and I, too, was entranced by her BEAUTY as each scarf was removed as the music and her mesmerizing movements escalted...more and more of her body was exposed as each of the 7 or 8 veils, but for the last, were stripped away...and the smallness of her breasts beneath the heavily bejewelled bikini top hung with scallops of baubles did not detract from her sensuous allure: she had an exquisite body and I, a classically trained Fine Artist, longed to DRAW HER, to try to capture the intense emotion of her performance.... As the music built towards the climax, those eyes playfully including ME (again and again) her hips and torso flashing the men and I were entranced and increasingly eager to see what lay BENEATH this final veil...she GRACEFULLY whipped it away...to reveal a neatly trimmed mustache and an elegant goatee ala Johnny Depp! He GRINNED AT ME and I was UTTERLY ASTONISHED to realize I had been completely CONVINCED I was watching a BEAUTIFUL woman when in fact, this was an astonishingly beautiful MAN. THE HILARITY of the reveal was shared by the vast crowd in the venue and I leapt to my feet as did most of the patrons. THE MEN were LAUGHING SO HARD at both themselves and those men who were increasingly...seduced...by what had unfolded. The butt of the joke were MY boyfriend and the woman who had been MOST visibly MOVED by their EMOTIONS evoked by this performance...for the reveal made HIS (my lover's) ever more INTENSE interest and HER visible and INTENSE JEALOUSY all the more HILARIOUS. Who you REALLY ARE is revealed in such moments. He, the danseur, was beaded in sweat and breathing heavily at the end of his INCREDIBLE performance and we (first time patrons) had ~ I just this minute realized ~ unwittingly been A HUGE part of the show❤ I just this minute realized WHY he had targeted OUR TABLE...because we were LIKELY the only patrons NOT in on the joke!!! The authentic REACTIONS of those women who were insecure enough to feel THREATENED and those men who could not help but be increasingly AROUSED by the subterfuge were an essential part of the performance...as the CROWD was (I realize in retrospect) watching US...anticipating that moment when the TRUTH was revealed. This was in 1984, so homophobia was far more rampant than it is today...which made this ever MORE hilarious. He, the beautiful VERY MASCULINE MAN was so KIND to non verbally communicate WITH ME: including me such that I thoroughly enjoyed the performance...fully believing him to be a BEAUTIFUL SENSUOUS WOMAN for the ENTIRE performance. I had been oblivious to the fact that the restaurant had closed and that the owner had locked the doors, and the STAFF had joined the CROWD...and at that point individuals at each of the other tables (and the BIG GUY himself) had whipped out bottles of OUZO they had kept hidden until this "after-hours" EVENT began. The REAL entertainment began AFTER the kitchen CLOSED...but having never seen such a ritual before...I did not know what was in store for us. My words are Inadequate to communicate how WONDERFUL this ENTIRE PERFORMANCE was....how PLAYFUL and INCLUSIVE and WONDERFULLY POSITIVE this experience WAS...but I can SUMMON those INTENSELY POSITIVE EMOTIONS by simply RECALLING that...performance. ❤
