I’m 17 years old and now have to talk about how the controlled crying my parents chose to use has massively caused a lot of my anxiety. I have huge issues with feeling disattached from my own emotions and with anxiety. A lot of this has come from my subconscious being told that no one will come when I am in distress. Please do not follow this advice and make the same mistake my parents did. The silence isn’t success it’s just deep and traumatic distress.

I'm autistic and a children's author. I could NEVER imagine telling a baby, "You're okay," and putting them back to bed when they vomit, as opposed to actually caring for them and making sure they're actually okay. "Sleep training" is abusive and reminds me of ABA!!

Been trying for the past 3 days for daytime naps and it's tough (he goes to sleep fine in the evenings). My 8 month old just stands in his cot and cries like nothing else. We will stay the course and see how we go. Edit: 6 days in and he just fell asleep in less than 10 minutes! He is sleeping longer and deeper for his daytime naps and is doing great. It was really hard hearing him cry, but we trusted the process and genuinely are blown away by the results. The sense of accomplishment when they finally fall asleep as mentioned in this video is absolutely real and feels amazing. Thanks so much, this video was so helpful. To other parents worried about doing this, trust the process and try and keep busy so you don't have to listen to them cry, at first our son was crying for 45 minutes before he went to sleep, but now its down to less than 10!

Your baby has just learnt that you won't be there for them when they cry so they gave up on asking for help

This is the cruelest advice you can give to new parents. Babies needs don't go away just because the sun goes down. Babies should be responded to when they cry to build security and a strong bond with their parents.

What about babies who sleep in the same room as the parents? Can this method still work?

What if your 11 month old regularly wants breastfeeding throughout the night? Do I stop that cold turkey once starting the controlled crying?

That's not controlled crying... That is sleep training.

Babies are supposed to get attention. Newborns could literally die if never held. Why do you think they want attention in the first place? Maybe they're bored, maybe they're feeling overwhelmed by a situation they're in, maybe they feel lonely, and they have no way to cope with such emotions, so they call for "help". A baby/child will learn to trust you if you comfort them, and as they grow they will stop crying because they know you'll always be there no matter what (as opposed to letting your babies cry to sleep, while they learn no one is coming to comfort them... that's sad) So in the first case, you have self-confident children who know they are safe, in the second you have children that might underdevelop from an emotional attachment perspective and you will wonder where is that coming from ... which one do you prefer? I would never let my baby cry to sleep alone.

This is horrible. Glad I watched this before I brought her book. The baby is giving up and falling asleep out of exhaustion. Great advice. Yuck

Basically ignore your babies needs until they figure out their parent isn’t paying attention and won’t come help them. Don’t feed your baby when they wake after 6mths old, again just ignore the crying and let them give up and fall asleep. This is the epitome of lazy parenting. Babies wake up, they cry. If you don’t want to deal with that and can’t be bothered waking during the night then get a dog
