Thank you so much! This is exactly the info I’ve been looking for. Mostly on youtube you have people who talk talk talk talk, you waste so much time being subjected to information that’s none of your business, you fast forward and backward trying to get to the place where they finally get to the itty bitty point but it’s so vague you have to google some more. Drives me bananas! You on the other hand go straight to the point, no BS, and voila, you just outlined a clear, concise and simple spray schedule for my home orchard and pertinent information on promoting the health of my apple trees. Thank you again. Now I have but one formidable garden nemesis: ants! I’ve used food grade diatomaceous earth (the ant’s response: really, are you serious?), borax/sugar lures, no dice, commercial traps, useless, some concoction using orange oil, I felt stupid. They are everywhere in the yard, good soil, bad soil, natural stone, fake stone, you name it. And they’re mining aphids out of spite. My poor roses! I just purchased a spray called Wondercide. Let’s see how that goes. If you have ideas, please share.

Loved the fungicide video and I’m glad I found this video as well! I have dogwoods that are severely infected with anthracnose. I recently ordered apple, peach, and cherry trees which should be here in 2 months. Do these principles of when to spray (silverbud, half inch green, petal fall, etc.) apply to cherry trees as well as apple and peach trees? Thanks for posting!

For the most part yes. Just check your labels on the pesticides. Some products are labeled for apple but not peaches and vice versa etc. Daconil works well for anthracnose and the sprays should start just as the flowers are starting to open then again just after they fall off

Hi, I live in Southeast Ma. Have about a dozen mixed fruit trees. last year I got hammered with plum curculio. My this year is petal fall is different for different fruit trees. So worried about the plum curculio, do I spray insecticide just on the trees that the petals have fallen? Will this approach still endanger bees? Thanks BobD

Yes, in a perfect world you would spray trees that are at petal fall when it happens. Then you should spray the others when petal fall is in place. Shouldn’t be a major concern for the bees, commercial orchards use this approach on an annual basis. Good question! Hope this helps.

First off let me say "Thank You" for all your advice in your excellent video. I followed your tree spraying schedule to the letter this year and managed to win the war against the dreaded plum curculio. We have the best fruit crop we've had in many years. Unfortunately I have developed a new problem...I have self diagnosed it as sooty blotch. It shows up as a black or dark greenish material on the apples. It will wash or rub off quite easily and then the fruit looks awesome. Obviously, I really don't want to wash all of my apples in the future. I rotated several different fungicides throughout the summer. What did I get wrong? Could this be a result of the exceptionally rainy summer we've had and if so, how can I prevent it from happening again? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you find Surround WP? Or any organic insecticide?

You can find it online, I don’t know of any stores (in my area) that sell it.

In NJ our coop extension recommends Acetamiprid insecticide, any experience with that?

Yes, Acetamiprid is an excellent option for apple trees. On a small scale it is the active ingredient in Ortho brand “flower fruit and vegetable insect killer”. For larger scale situations it goes by “Assail” insecticide.

And yes…I do use Assail after petal fall and I’ve been quite satisfied with the control. When I put together this video I was not aware that Ortho had an Acetamiprid product readily available for smaller scale backyard growers, otherwise I definitely would have mentioned it in the video!

Spectracide Triazicide limits you to 5 applications per year do you happen to know why?

Most pesticides have limits as to how many applications are allowed per year. These are in place to reduce the possibility of pesticide residues building up over time to unacceptable levels. Sometimes they are also put in place to reduce the risk of insects or diseases building up a resistance to any one product.
