Controlling snare drum buzz

Yeah, when I was younger (even younger than I am now), sympathetic snare buzz, induced snare buzz, drove me NUTS. Turns out, it is really no big deal. Just take care of a couple common sense parameters, and it really isn't much of an issue at all. Unless you're that sound guy who absolutely can't live without micing the snares. To me, that's like micing a squeaky throne, or a creaking cymbal stand. Tune that snare nice and tight, make sure the toms are not too close to the snare in pitch, make sure the bottom snare head is extra tight. Done!

Hey Karl. The never ending saga of snare buzz 101. I could not hear shit from shiola as far as buzz when you started playing. Your sound overall was low on entire clip. Only when you adjusted snare throw off was the sound in clip 👌 perfect. I get the buzz from my 12 tom. I've played all the games the Tube has to offer and snare buzz is imminent. Maybe for around 800 or 1000 dolla ( Notheast accent ) one can achieve a smooth snare that just doesn't buzz. Tomorrow I will try to switch the Ambassador vintage clear and coated on that 12 tom back to the coated on the bottom and set the tension proppa with the drum dial. Good Stuff EH'

Edward! I'll try to explain the sound levels. The dialog level is high due to the video cameras, but, if I were to record the drums with those camera mics, it would blow speakers and be horribly distorted. Number B, the snare mic was the only live mic, and I was hitting the tom, not the snare, resulting in a much quieter recording. The only time I recorded with all mics was when I played the entire set. As far as spending huge monies on a new snare, that won't matter. Any snare can can sound great when tuned propah. My primary snare for a long time was a REMO 3x13 piccolo. It was very nice sounding, and I paid damn near nothing for it. I used it until I blew a lug, and that was that. I still have it, so I may yet resurrect it! The tuning on your tom will be relative to your snare. Make sure that the snare and toms are not tuned too closely. Thanks for watching!

It really isn't a big deal, unless you have band mates or a soundman having a conniption, in which case, it's their problem! You can always turn your snares off ( I've done it!).
