right, but is it not possible that a) we've cultivated and selected plants based on needs (calories, nutrients, etc.) b) that parts of them would "want" to be eaten like how berries, fruits, and flowers evolve to be colorful and nourishing (to us, and bees for instance) i'm not saying that these may not be problems, evolution does not always "make things easier/better" at zero cost, for instance human babies are now born with skulls too large for the birth canal which, before modern medicine, puts the mother at significant mortality risk, but at the "benefit" of a more fully developed organism (a.k.a. the baby gestates for 9 months in the womb, and then "gestates", really, for another 3-6 years, unlike say an antelope, or deer, which is running in less than A FEW HOURS after being born) The problem I have is in the language can feel misleading, a human baby in the womb essentially goes to war, at the cellular and biological level, with the mother, and vice versa. From the bacteria to defending nutrients, vitamins, calories, BLOOD, bacteria, etc. Obviously no one would say that a woman and her baby are "at war" with eachother (at the macro level), but at the biological level they absolutely are. I do appreciated Saladino and hope he continues to present, but I'm not a cult member, I appreciate Saladino a lot and will continue hear from him in the future, but granular, micro studies can be incredibly misleading as these dynamics don't always move up into higher orders of complex systems. It would be proposterous to think that plants DON'T defend themselves, but does that carry over into the complex system of human biology? Also, clearly, there will always be exceptions, even if there are MILLIONS of exceptions, there are BILLIONS of people, so it can still be less than 1% of the population (like the trans population is ~1%) but the exception does not prove the rule.

In reality, the presence of glyphosate in animals is much lower than other pesticides used presently or in the past. Compared to the other herbicides, glyphosate is relatively benign. @@ecarlson4987 While I don't disagree with your statement, there is emerging evidence that it may. Other pesticides/herbicides lack the attention that glyphosate does unfortunately. What I'll never understand is how some radical vegans can argue that plant-based is not only healthier but also "easier" than animal-based. I recently read an article that was very vegan-motivated and discussed the potential health detriments of raw milk. In it, they correctly listed all of the nutrients that raw milk contains, so far so good. But then they also said that these are only in such small quantities that, if you wanted the same amount of vitamin A as a glass of raw milk has, you only need to eat X amount of carrots. And if you want the same amount of iron, you only need X amount of spinach. And for vitamin C, only X amount of oranges, etc. It went on like that. And then I just thought well, who in their right mind would go and buy something like 17 different fruits and vegetables, then weigh them and portion them in very specific quantities rather than having a simple glass of raw milk? Isn't it much easier and cheaper to just get some raw milk? Never mind the toxins of all those vegetables vs. the digestive enzymes in the raw milk, but just for convenience alone I think the raw milk wins by a mile.

And by the way, I have nothing against vegans per se, everyone should do what they think is right for them as long as they don't try to force others to do the same against their will. Those are the radical ones I mean, the ones that try hard to convince everyone that their own life choices are ideal for everyone while completely defying logic and science. First of all, we need to define toxicity. What is it? What makes a chemical or nutrient toxic? The dose? The chemicals in it? If you define toxicity as something that will make you sick or kill you if you get too much, then water would be considered toxic. So would salt. I need to understand what toxicity is defined as to make a judgement about it... Toxicity may be defined as and excess dose of something, or it could possibly just be defined as something bad for you. I don't know which.

I think he needs to talk about fiber more. I think too much fiber irritates the gut lining and feeds bad bacteria. Particularly the phytic acid is also labeled an antinutrient because humans lack the phytase enzyme needed to break it down. As it passes through the gut, phytic acid binds to minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium so they are not well-absorbed in the intestine.

Having said that, I felt great when I did carnivore for a few weeks and my gut was never happier. Small clean stools, no farts, no upset stomach, it was as if I didn’t have a gut. Pretty amazing. Hi Paul, if i cook bone broth with the veggies (mainly tubers + onions) do the oxalates, lectins, and other antinutrients get deactivated or do they just leak in the broth and do the same damage when consumed? I guess what i am trying to find out is if longer cooking time (i.e. 12-16hrs as for preparing bone broth) would significantly reduce the antinutrient burden. Any experimental data on this? i.e. from personal experience, if legumes are cooked longer or at higher pressure/cooking temperature, they are waay easier on the stomach, but it might be mostly due to additional cellulose fiber breakdown by prolonged heat - by wich proccess one might even be releasing additional antinutrients from the within cellulose fibers (i.e. cell walls that get broken down by heat/pressure), and that means you end up consuming even more antinutrients that would have otherwise stayed bound within the cell walls.

As far as I'm concerned vegetables, all chemicals in foods etc. and cheeses and yoghurts, in fact anything on the supermarket shelf that has a number or even more than two or three items for instance a can with salmon must contain only saline or it stays on the shelf. I can consume cream and butter but not milk. Basically, the cream and butter are only fat. I can get away with one type of lettuce and one type of pear but it has to be ripe and peeled so it's a bit of a waste of time. weird way to phrase the question. Of course some plants contain highly toxic compounds, no one that's serious questions that. There are also plants or parts of plants that aren't toxic, no one questions that either. it's completely plausible that humans may have adapted to take advantage of some chemicals that plants evolved to contain that protect them by warding off (some/many) "predators". There's also the concept of hormesis, which i've heard both you and more plant-friendly researchers discuss.

It's sad living on this planet because, in order for something to live, something else has to give its life to some degree. Plants definitely don't want to be eaten and neither do the animals, but it is what it is. I think it's a balance personally of meat and plants. I recently started the carnivore diet...again, LOL! I have to say it makes me feel so much better and stronger! I was a vegetarian for a year when I got diagnosed with my cancer and that was amazing too, but holy fuck did I lose muscle and strength. That really bothered me a lot! As soon introducing meat into my diet I gained some muscle again. In my humble opinion, I still don't think eating this much meat every day is healthy long-term because I highly doubt our ancestor hunters and gathers were able to hunt down that much meat. They'd have to go days and even weeks without meat unfortunately I'd assume at times. Would they rather eat meat over berries and nuts...Yes! Again though, if you can afford it, meat is readily available for you. Eating good quality meat isn't always affordable. I think if one is to be on the carnivore diet for long periods then they should fast for 3 days here and there at least to clear things out. Fasting is in our genetics because again our ancestors had no choice sometimes if they couldn't find food. It's all a balance I think. I honestly feel like the carbs like bread and pasta are the issue along with heavily processed foods. All I can say is when I stick to the Carvivore diet I feel better and when I eat bread or pasta I immediately start to feel off. It's that whole insulin thing. I really appreciate what Dr. Saladino and Dr. Baker have taught us!

@@robertamaral2349 If we are using that definition of sentience that is "the capacity to feel, perceive or experience subjectively", well maybe plants have A level of sentience. So I agree with you there. I still do not think that just because plants are living organisms, that justifys killing farm animals which we have established are more sentient (if you believe plants are sentient in the first place).

Even if we are correct about the "ancestral" diet (and this suggests we need more nuance: "How ancient people fell in love with bread, beer and other carbs" - www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01681-w ), the fact is humans have been eating a varied diet for hundreds of generations, and I am not convinced the explosive increase in obesity, chronic disease and autoimmune conditions in the last few decades is due to eating too much plant foods. Firstly, most so-called veggies are actually fruits. Others are tubers, and most leafy foods are only used in well-cooked or fermented form in traditional cuisines around the world. Eating a bowl of nothing but raw kale is a Western "innovation". If we are having issues with traditionally used and traditionally prepared plant foods, I would like to understand why instead of confining myself to grass-fed beef for the rest of my life. What other theories could explain our health problems as a civilization? Is it EMF, or the modern sedentary lifestyle plus processed foods, or the Trevor Marshall "metagenomic/dysbiosis" theory, or Vitamin A poisoning as Grant Genereux proposes?
@mfion3 жыл бұрын
Great questions. It's certainly not all/only about food. I would like to point out, though, that I'm not sure Saladino makes a blanket statement that we are "eating too much plant foods". He does talk about insulin resistance/sensitivity, which seems to be at least in large part driven by the (over)consumption of carbs, and he definitely talks about seed oils and their high concentrations of linoleic acid. With respect to plants, he points out the many ways in which they are/can be toxic. For people whose bodies are not in good condition, those toxins can really wreak havoc. He does focus a lot on carnivore as a healing diet for people who have not found cures for different kinds of diseases.
@justdude27753 жыл бұрын
Don't throw everything under a "plant food" blanket. Humans have been eating meat and non-genetically-modified vegetables and fruits for hundreds of thousands of years. Agriculture and growing crops has only been around for 10000 years. And yet now it's what we base 70-80% of our nutrition on. The human body has never adapted for eating high-glycemic carbohydrates, which are very different from an ancient vegetable or a fruit that were small, sour, and tiny.

Yes but.... I teach -- full time -- how to eat wild food. Wild fruit is dramatically different than man-manipulated fruit. Man makes fruit to be very sweet whereas Mother Nature makes fruit only sweet enough to have animals that can taste sweet to eat. Persimmons, for example, are astringent until the seeds are ready to germinate. The fruit then eliminates the astringency creating just a little sweetness. Man-made persimmon are a sugar bomb. Wild strawberries are barely sweet, cultivated ones are extremely sweet. So yes, if you mean wild fruit eat away. But not man-made fruit because it is excessively sweet.

It’s crazy, there are carnivores that include plants 🌱 n their diet and thrive in the wild. So apparently their systems have the ability to counter the toxicity. I think ur ability to deal with the toxicity is based on ur blood type. I cannot eat nightshade plants but I can consume cruciferous vegetables. I can’t consume cantelope or oranges but lemons limes and berries are fine. Honey is extremely beneficial but u have carnivore advocates who say you shouldn’t consume honey, which is insane. Honey is the closest substance in composition to human blood and is anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, and an antioxidants. I get the same result on my blood type diet as I get with a carnivore diet and quite frankly I think my blood type diet is a healthier diet. The culprits are processed foods grains, pasteurized dairy and refined sugars nuts and seeds are suspect as well although for my blood type walnuts and almonds seem to be fine.
