So interesting. People don't understand that just because you have narcolepsy doesn't mean that you get good sleep. I have suffered for over a decade with narcolepsy and it's hard to get a handle on the condition and live your life.

That isn’t enough. You play a “sleep lottery” for DELTA waves. It’s a step, it’s something, but it is NOT enough. It’s nkt a lack of sleep. It’s not a lack of REM sleep (most narcoleptics immediately go in to REM sleep and micro sleep as well = dreaming while awake) - it is the complete lack of DELTA WAVES. Orexin or not - those DELTA waves are MISSING. Two hour sleep intervals or not... DELTA waves. If ANYONE has a way to INDUCE DELTA WAVE SLEEP PATTERNS... I’m working on it... good luck, and God Bless you all. I mean that. This is a horrid condition that very few people understand unless they have it. We are all we have and we aren’t awake all that much. :o

I was to the point of not wanting to live anymore in December 2016. I was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy in January 2017 after years of docs trying to forgive out what was wrong. I was so exhausted that I was taking 20mg adderall three times a day as prescribed, and I was falling asleep still even a hour after taking it. Same thing happened with 3 other stimulants we tried at different times and since I have been on xyrem it has completely changed my life. I have more energy for sure, but still struggling with taking naps through the day. Driving is still hard to do, but I get by. It's so much better from what I was though. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

beebop shopbop; I have sought the help of many physicians for many years due to how my life has been affected by this "Narcolepsy." I've been told that I suffer from seasonal depression, Vitamin D deficit, and to exercise more and this last doctor said there's nothing wrong. I fall asleep at the park while exercising, at the airport, at church, having conversations, I even choose sleep over eating even no matter how big my appetite maybe. Driving can be a challenge at times. I limit my driving as much as possible now.

I've been using GHB to sleep for two years now. I feel a lot better after two decades of sleep deprivation, but I still need modafinil during the day. It is a lot better than the sole treatment of amphetamines I was given in Australia. I carry a lot of resentment for the way I was treated by my own country.

Now, if we could PLEASE get a generic. $15,000 per month for something you could (theoretically) cook up a year's worth of in your kitchen (with ingredients from Home Depot) for under $200 a year. (Don't do it!) $165,000 a year per person! Holy profit margin!! Monopoly anyone?

Tell me what I can get in Home Depot to mimic this. I’ve suffered from narcolepsy since 9th grade and found ways to compensate. It’s been a struggle and unless you suffer from it or have a loved one with it, you wouldn’t understand how hard it is. My medical career has suffered as a result because It became worse after having a child. Now I suffer from insomnia and tinnitus. I pray and meditate but stressful situations make it all worse. Diet modification does help with having fewer episodes but fall off the wagon once and you have to start all over again. I always have to plan travel in advance and keep trips short to avoid falling asleep at the wheel. I’ve been stopped a number of times and officers thought I was intoxicated until they spoke with me and tested me. It’s unbelievable and I pray a cure is found. Having it worsen after childbirth kept me from having another one for fear of making it worse than now and I greatly regret making that decision.. Now over 45 so only if sent by God.

Im 21 years old and i firgued out through watching several videos like these and research that i have Narcolepsy with the Cataplexy. Seems that the Cataplexy didnt it start until after highschool. Feeling weak to where i have to catch myself from falling when laughing or getting excited. This is beginning to effect my life more and more as I begin to get older and time seems to fly by faster. I sleep at least 10 hours every night but miss out on a few hours due to the restless sleep. Seems like a 5 min nap does me better than a full nights sleep. So i take several of those a day to try avoid falling asleep at the wrong time. I often do fall asleep at the wrong times like in class , while driving, and even working. Wish i could go throughout my day without falling asleep. Im now in college and falling asleep in every class. It’s affecting my grades like it has my whole early years & i miss out on alot because of it.

P3P customs I’m 19 and my narcolepsy started Jr year of high school when I was falling asleep in class and experiencing mild cataplexy. I failed my junior math course because of it and had to explain why on my college applications lol. My parents thought I was depressed and even my doctor wasn’t listening until I did my research. My friends are super respectful about it bc I explained what exactly it is so they know when I’m having an episode and are able to either wake me up or let me sleep. After all that research I am lucky to be on a medication that helps me get through the day so that I can take a full load of classes, but it’s so frustrating when it catches you off guard during a test or something. Try asking your doctor about medication options, they might be able to put you on something that works. :)

Diet modification helps a lot. Avoid carbs and sugars as much as possible. Schedule small naps throughout the day, 5-10 minutes does wonders. Keep upbeat music around or exercise daily, drink Lots of water. Keep ice cold water while driving and take lots of sips, pull over somewhere safe if you feel the early stages coming on and take the key out of the ignition. There are a few supplements that work but not so well. I found intermittent fasting works too but hard for me to keep up after college with career, family and bills. If it’s something you must stay awake for…just don’t eat anything but maybe yogurt or those citrus fruit cups and keep caffeine at a minimum!!! I try not to drink more than one cup of coffee if I have a conference to attend. Do Not snack on chips or drink soda especially those containing high fructose corn syrup. Btw for college it’s imperative you put yourself on a schedule to study after every lecture and between classes. Today’s technology is great bc you really don’t have to do the old fashion cassette tapes and then go back and type the lectures where you fell asleep, lol. Utilize the technology for your benefit. You may not want to but many of my professors thought I was trying to attend professional school and work graveyard which contributed to my sleepiness. Some will understand but I wasn’t diagnosed until my second professional year so I didn’t know why I had the issue. Being a good proactive student helped. Hope this helps. I’m routing for you. It’s how I made it through Pharmacy School decades ago.
@sjgeneralcontractors2137
@sjgeneralcontractors2137 2 жыл бұрын
I pray for you. I had this issue as well and have known medical and law students with it too. It’s a must to take your naps between classes, record lecturers and keep a prescription for adderall, provigil or xylem during finals and midterm exams. I fell asleep often taking finals just to wake up with 15 minutes left. Professors are not compassionate nor will they wake you. Your an adult and they expect you to be proactive. I would not take medication daily cause tolerance builds up fast. Your diet also plays a huge role and avoid lots of caffeine (I know it’s hard, but required) no sweets and no carbs of any kind! Also get with a study group that understands and is supportive. Find an online support group for dialogue and get a little exercise in so you sleep well during the evening. I really hope this helps some love. I had to navigate myself through college and they were no prescription alternatives other than adderall or Ritalin, which I hate but became necessary.

I took xyrem and I did not see much change in my energy levels. I started having emotional outbursts and a few times when I would wake up for school I would have severe cataplexy attacks and i would have to go back to sleep. All of this stopped after I stopped taking it. My doctor said both of these side effects only affected a small percentage of users. But everyone responses differently to medicine. I take melatonin at night now and I feel it helps me stay asleep longer and reduces how often i wake up in the middle of the night.

Narcolepsy, if left unchecked and uncontrolled, can ruin one's life in this world of vanity. Don't let it ruin the second greatest gift God has given to you, which is life. Ecclesiastes teaches us (1:1) The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. (3:1) To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: (2) A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted; (3) A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; (4) A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; (5) A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; (6) A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; (7) A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; (8) A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (9) What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? (10) I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. (11) He hath made every [thing] beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. (12) I know that [there is] no good in them, but for [a man] to rejoice, and to do good in his life. (13) And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it [is] the gift of God. (14) I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth [it], that [men] should fear before him. (Ecclesiastes 1:1 & 3:1-14 KJV)

The medication sodium oxibate doesn't work for Narcolepsy that well but it does tackle Cataplexy very well..... However keep in mind this drug does very little to suppress EDS.... Were talking about a 20% reduction in EDS which helps but doesn't make you feel 100% normal and well rested..... Honestly if I didn't have Cataplexy I definitely would not be taking this shit. You also can't take the medication with alcohol which really sucks and if you say I'm going to skip taking it for 1 night so I can go drinking with my buddy's. Well then you can expect to feel like shit the whole entire next day which is really irritating. Also Sodium oxibate tends to really slow down urine flow so the feeling of not emptying your bladder all the way really sucks.

That's because you have to take it at the same time everyday, a gradually higher doses over years, or you get withdrawal. The withdrawal from GABAergic substances (Such as Xanax, Valium, Alcohol, Xyrem, Baclofen, etc) is, in fact, primarily seizures. It's also not actually salt. It's also not a poison. Granted, I think taking GHB every day is probably a terrible idea for long term health, but hey it works for some people, and not for others, just like any medication.

Xyrem has horrible side effects! I was on it for 9 months and I would not use it again if it was free. The other GABA-b agonist is baclofen, with a combination of baclofen and diazepam, I sleep better than I have most of my life! The best thing is, baclofen is cheap, a months prescription is $8- even without insurance but xyrem is $15,000-! Who is good to convince their insurance company that a good nights sleep is worth more than most other drug? In fact, xyrem is one of the 10 most expensive drugs in the US and no insurance company will pay for it, instead, Jazz pharmaceuticals gets the government to pay for it! If they would decriminalize it then the generic versions could be sold and this would be available at a more reasonable price to those who need it. While we're waiting for that, baclofen is the best thing out there!

My story is a lot like many of you. I was unofficially diagnosed about 16 years ago where I had a doctor prescribe me dextroamphetamine. Thankfully I wasn’t on it along because the side effects were terrible. After switching to a great family dr. he recommended a pulmonologist who works with a lot of patients with sleep disorders. After the first visit -He set me up with a sleep study( this is where you go to a facility they hook up probes all over you and can see if your actually going into R.E.M sleep and other things) which is where my official diagnosis of Narcolepsy with Cataplexy came in. I was prescribed Provigil at first -2 times a day for a while. I still was super sleepy so he changed it to Nuvigil 1 x a day. I don’t remember if Xyrem was giving to me from day one- I don’t think it was but not long after I started taking it and it was a game changer. One thing I can say is I notice things run much smoother when I’m in the gym. It’s a catch 22 sometimes bc just gaining the 25 lbs can introduce sleep apnea back in the picture which causes way more problems like muscle knots and migraines. So I will make it a mission to eat as healthy as I can and be active as I can. I also try and make sure to sleep on my side bc with the medication sleep apnea can be an issue as well. Oh and if you live alone get the snore app - it will actually record your nights sleep bc I had no idea I was doing it as bad as I was. Hope everyone gets a good night 💤!! And if your not getting the answers or help with the dr your seeing- find another one!!
