Yes he is not a guitar virtuoso, but he has essentially completed Metallica songs. Kirk is part of Metallica and without his solos those songs would not be the same. There is only few guitar players who are able to do this. Not even Marty though I love him a lot.

Young kirk was wild and unstoppable. Older kirk seems like he’s stopped trying. Its’s like he doesn’t write solos anymore, he just shows up and wings
@arai3205 Жыл бұрын
Well for hardwire I agree his solos aren’t the best but some just fit the songs lol but I fell for 72 season we might get a few good solos
@lapinus Жыл бұрын
The thing is that the first 7 albums had good guitar solos... the problem is the last 2. Death Magnetic has some banger solos, like Unforgiven III, the day that never comes, and a couple others (the only bad ones are imo the end of the line and suicide and redemption). But Hardwired probably only has Spit Out The Bone and maybe the title track. It's obvious that he's being limited by someone else, and I believe that someone else to be Lars. There's a video where Kirk played a very sick solo and Lars told him to play something else that was way worse... The thing that pisses me off even more is that if you listen to his solo albums, you can find probably some of the best stuff he's ever written, while still sounding like Hammett. It's clear that someone is telling him what he's allowed and not allowed to play, and it's sad, because the Metallica that we have today is a watered down, soulless version of the band that there once was. That said, Kirk is still a very good guitar player whenever he wants to be, and he influenced many people to pick up this amazing hobby. So, the blame should not even be put on him.

I would love to hear another Kirk solo album. Lars is sort of a Blackmore of the drums, but without the skills lol

It is not about his past work. It is about past 25 years... 1.) He stopped practicing 2.) He does not give a damn about his new solos, he puts no effort to write a solo 3.) He usually does not care how his solos sound live anymore
@imagereflection4826 Жыл бұрын
Kirk's written some of the most memorable and iconic solos in music, in the 80s he composed his solos and would use counter melodies and certain thematica to fit the theme of each song, in the 90s he enjoyed a more wah Infused solo sound which really worked for the style of music they were doing then and since then he has gone for the improv solo approach which he enjoys but for a lot of people they miss more composed thematic solos that Kirk did in the 80s
@markofaggression Жыл бұрын
he gets alot of hate cuz compared to other big bans such as megadeth for example, their lead work is outstanding and out of this world, after listening to marty, chris, or kikos works u just cannot go back to regular fast pentatonics and wah
@curtwehrmeyer124 Жыл бұрын
We all know what Kirk is capable of. To hear the Wah with the pentatonic scale over and over leaves you unsatisfied for a guitar player of his stature. Satriani was a teacher of his and we all know he was taught a lot more than what he has been giving. Open up some more Kirk, shredding that fret board is how you got here, its also how you stay here.

Kirk is great. There's a great deal of bitter people because he's successful. I think he said he has arthritis or something and that's why he does not land all notes now and people is just bashing him. His contribuitions to rock music are notable, but people just can't deal with people who get things done.

Being a master at guitar and being a masterful musician are two different things, yeah there are tons of players better than him.. but he’s great and his work with Metallica is phenomenal.

Why are people are so down on kirk hammets solos? the answer is right in front of you - your video has one solo released in past 10 years. all others were from lightning to black. he cant seem to play like he used to
@jto541 Жыл бұрын
Although I agree that Kirk is fairly limited as a guitarist and a musician compared to other greats, there's no doubt that he receives too much hate. Even though he would never attract a big audience on his own for his solo work, the only thing that matters is that he kicks ass in Metallica for the style of music they play. Whether you love him or hate him, Metallica would have never reached the same heights without Kirk, and his influence on budding guitarists is undeniable.
@neighbourhoodmusician Жыл бұрын
I think he is the perfect guitarist for Metallica and does fantastic work most of the time. However, the main criticisms seem to be: He has a tendency to drop outside of the key every now and again, has become a little bit lazy and repetitive over the past decade or so and other people just constantly want to compare him to Dave Mustaine (even though the real best Megadeth guitar work has always been Poland and/or Friedman).

Now all these solos LIVE, please😂 That being said, I agree that Kirk is a killer player. But in my opinion Jason is the one treated really unfair.

To me it’s not that he isn’t technical enough I just don’t enjoy his melodic phrases really. I can’t hum anything he plays really it’s just licks. Exception being the one solo I enjoy that one

kirk just has his own style, his career is focused on metallica, not so much on being a guitar instructor with perfect technique, take for example michael angelo batio, yes, he released several albums, but it is evident that his musical career is focused on teaching, the opposite of kirk, none of the options is wrong, everyone chooses their path
@redstar7292 Жыл бұрын
I just prefer the depth & particular intensity of his sound. And it's perfect for Metallica's music. . Excessive technical wizardry for it's own sake can be really boring, and they are making up for something they are lacking. Your meant to playing music. What's for if you don't do anything with it. Some of the best guitar players, just did the old 3 chord trick. Hendrix first blew people away with his performance of Killing Floor - which was all rhythm playing. Machine Gun he rang out a couple of really good notes in the solo which made it..

A lot of people can play Kirk's solos or James Hatfield riffs, but how many people can compose a song and write the stuff they did in the earlier years?!?! I'm not the best guitarists and can play The Unforgiven solo but to write something that melodic and perfect with the song is a different story. And I agree with a lot of people on the later stuff, but the earlier years he was on point.

He can’t Bend. Almost always to high. His vibrato is so stiff, no feel. Like malmsteen said: his solos are like anti-climax

everyone knows kirk made some great solos, but his recent work in hardwired and the two singles we've heard from 72 seasons are very boring. he cant improvise like he thinks he can, and needs to go back to composing original and innovative guitar solos. death magnetic had some great solos, so its still possible
@dermotrickerby2588 Жыл бұрын
It’s interesting that all your examples bar 1 were from pre load Metallica when Hammett had a hunger and passion for what he was doing. I think, on the last two albums his lead work has been lazy. The exemplary tonality, connections and good ideas that he brought to the music in the 80s and 90s are all but absent. I hope I’m proven wrong when the next album comes out and honestly I will be happy if I am but based on the evidence I’ve heard I feel this is a valid contribution to the commentary. Good video though, I think fans of Metallica want to hear an end result where Hammett has done his homework.

Most of these solos were also made 40 years ago. He just doesn't practice anymore, he even admits to it, so alot of his new work kinda just blends together and sounds the same. There's this video on KZbin where Paul Gilbert, a master of pentatonics" goes up against marty friedman in a sort of jam session, and the challenge was to stay in key. And Paul ended up looking like An amateur. Just by listening to what they're playing. Kirk just isn't very diverse. And the older he gets the less he seems to give a shit. Plus metallica is hyped up so much as the greatest metal band to exist and you compare them to others. . . Especially today.. . And they are just mid 🤷 idk how else to put it
@viniciusleaoa Жыл бұрын
Kirk has sime absolutely amazing solos. But I think some of his more recent work lacks inspiration. Just listen to the solo on "If darkness had a son"...it's so bland and boring in my opinion. Improvisation can be a good thing, but only if done well

a very sloppy lead player. too much pentatonic and they could have gotten a much better lead player after Dave was booted. Marty Friedman or Alex Scolnik would have been so much better.
