The biggest fail is announcing that these watches will be available online few weeks after launch and then few days later announcing that it will be stores only. It's the biggest marketing fail I have seen in a while.

Agreed! Swatch: Swiss watch for all…. 🤮 As an Omega owner and lover the epic fail ; planned or by happen stance is a black eye for people wanting to get into the history and make of Omega. As stated. DONT pay over list and put cash in the pockets of the scalpers! They are no better than ticket scalpers and now with all the faults being discovered with the QC of this offering, wait

First, I was about to buy a Moonswatch. But since the movement inside cannot be replaced in case of a failure, I decided not to buy one. Coincidentally, I found an unbeatable offer by Bruno Soehnle for one of their high-end quartz chronographs at a price just 49 Euro more than a Moonswatch. So I got a high quality watch, instead of a cheaply made Swatch for about the same amount of money. Bruno Soehnle even decorate their quartz movements with Geneva stripes and polished and blued screw heads and put them under a display case back!

Well in their defense they never expected the reaction that this release caused, so naturally their strategy had to change. Let's say they did release this online, then we would be experiencing the same issues we had with the Playstation 5's and all the other hot items that were bought up by bots. Does this situation suck for us as consumers? Absolutely yes, but remember at the same time this problem was also caused by the consumers. I'd say just be patient and eventually they will be more widely available.

I own several Omegas & love the brand. At first I thought the Swatch Moon Watch would cheapen the Omega brand. Then I realized this is a fun watch available in fun colors so you can wear the watch to fit any mood or situation. It is cheap enough to buy all of them. Then reality set in. Swatch said it would be readily available and it is not. Swatch said we could buy it online (since there are not many Swatch stores) and it is not available. As of today, I have soured on this limited supply strategy and no longer want to waste my time to keep checking the website to be continually disappointed. I have lost interested in buying the watch. Kudos to the Swatch marketing department for breaking its promises.

Is some of this down to the fact that they just can't make them fast enough and it was a much larger success than they ever expected? I'm not sure if this is a case of trying to copy Rolex, PP and AP with limited supply or it was just much more popular than they could have dreamed?
@xAdi420

It's not Swatch limiting the supply, they just genuinely cannot make them fast enough as of now. Give it a few months and they'll be readily available (in store at least). Online availability isn't something coming any time soon said a Swatch employee to me

Funny thing - at time of release, I would have gladly paid and placed an order online even if delivery was “fall 2022 or winter 2023.” A month ago, I would have stopped by a store and grabbed one if I was in a city with a store. Now, I truly think I would walk past a full display in a window with little more than a shrug. I just don’t want to be associated with this silliness. Nice idea, off putting execution.

First time viewer of this channel and liked your take on this...strange case. I was unaware of this product until a few months ago and was also exited by the prospect of a fun, inexpensive and colorful take on a classic, the inexpensive and colorful aspect of it being critical to why I liked it, but I was taken aback when it was not available online and saw what a mess it is to get it, and really not impressed with the cheapness of it. I enjoy watches and astronomy, but I'm also aware that this is money I can't be affording to throw away as I have kids, a luxury item is not high on the list of things I will spend on, and frankly my wife (who'd be the recipient of a colorful swatch-speedmaster) wouldn't be too crazy about it, as neither of us are big on jewelry, don't have a need for it and already have watches to cover our needs. I'd still rather look for a nice vintage Omega Constellation and give it to her as a gift, but again, she'll probably enjoy it more if I use that money on a nice trip or something she uses more day in and day out. If it was for me and watches, I'd still rather have a Bulova Lunar pilot. Subscribed to the channel.

I truly wanted one because I am a collector, but I can't afford an o.g. Speedmaster, so I was waiting for the online release, then Swatch decided "we're not doing the online release no more", in the meantime the hype died out, news about the poor quality of the watch came out and I became uninterested, so I got two Seiko monster, one Antarctica and one Night Antarctica, very cool watches, made of stainless steel, mechanical movements, beautiful dials. So long moonswatch.

Violence aside, I thought the release reinvigorated the industry by providing a much needed jolt, and was a welcome change from everybody complaining about unchanged Rolex releases. Given price was not a factor, I wish they found a more creative way to distribute these, like maybe requiring you show up with a >5 year old swatch to get one. Separately, I stopped by a store months ago to change the battery on my old pop swatch, and apparently they do this for free - gratis. I was pleasantly surprised.

Great video. Both sides well articulated. I've always been a huge fan of the Speedmaster Moonwatch and am still working on getting one. Most of my focus has been on the vintage Seamaster, De Ville and Constellation! The Swatch equivalent - is an opportunity to fill the gap until mine lands! The OG Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch can never be replaced by any colab. I wish they didnt do the dot-above-the-90 on the Moonswatch.

I went to London two weeks ago to check the stock levels around UK, and I was told by the manager at the Covent Garden branch that they only stock the moonswatch in the covent garden and one other London branch (not Oxford street), as well as one shop in Edinburgh. He also said people are *still waiting* for hours each day for watches that aren’t in stock. In London they flip them all - the colour doesn’t matter to them. This sucks for people like me who just wanted a cheap speedmaster.

Yup, they woulda gotten my money, if they'd been available. A great idea, with an utter fail of execution. It wasn't at all about owning an Omega, because it's not one. It was just an exciting idea, an "official" moon watch homage. I've never liked the Speedy enough to buy one. I liked the Bulova Lunar Pilot much better, a better story as well, behind it, and that's been my "moon" watch for years. But, I would've wasted my money on this collab, if available. Glad it wasn't, as the reviews are dismal. I bought the 50th Anniversary Lunar Pilot instead, to celebrate not getting this cheap piece. Bulova was definitely worth it, proper Limited Edition, broadly available, presentation box, commemorative coin, titanium build, sapphire, etc. They know how to release a watch.

I personally think that Omega is an aspirational brand (it not being the only one, of course). It has a history, quality and story it has been and still is creating. All Omegas in my eyes should be the prices they already are - in short offerering very good value for money, high quality and capable pieces. They should not be 'watered down' as such. I think a quartz Speedmaster or Seamaster (in the normal case and with the same everything else) at slightly lower price would have been a more suitable release whilst sticking to the brands values. Buuuut....that's just what I think. 🤷‍♂️🙂

I guess I'm in the majority and I really like these watches. The idea of this watch is great in the fact that it allows those who cannot afford a true Speedy to have something that draws inspiration from it. True, no one will be confused that these are as good, but I believe that is not the point. The point it is to have something fun and affordable. In that case, the folks as Swatch & Omega succeeded. The flippers of the world have ruined another set of watches. I want one, but will wait until the hype dies down. It might take a year or more. And I am fine with it.

The whole Moonswatch thing is very interesting. I mean, watches are jewelry, and people lining up to buy... cheap, disposable jewelry... is weird to me. On the other hand, I was looking for a nice cheap moonphase / day-night complication watch (being an astronomy aficionado) when this whole thing exploded, and THAT got me thinking moonwatch, and THAT got me thinking "but for this price?" and it all lead to setting my mind on a Bulova Lunar Pilot, 100US more than the official price of the Swatch/Omega plastic, yes, but certainly much more sensible that whatever inflated prices people where paying for those. And the Bulova is a NICE, quality watch. So to address one of your points, I guess this launch DID make some people get into a bit more quality watches, and that´s alright.
@baze3SC

You see people wearing stuff like beaded bracelets and these items are cheap too. I think Moonswatch occupies this disposable accessory space and it's meant to keep the actual Speedy cool. As far as actual watches go that Bulova you've got is a more respectable piece though honestly, I'm tired of both Omega and Bulova overplaying that Moon landing story :) If you think about it, just about any watch would've been able to fulfill that role.

In recent years I have become someone who appreciates watches. I'm not "well off" but I'm not poor by any means. I have a small collection, mostly Japanese watches cause that's what I like, but the Omega Speedmaster has ALWAYS been a watch I have coveted for my collection. Not to flex, because I believe watches should be worn and appreciated for what they are, not a status symbol. I find myself often in my down time staring and intently (maybe for too long) watching the graceful sweep of an autos second hand. There's something rather enjoyable about that and for me, that's why I collect them.

Taking stock of what's happening with this watch, I would recommend saving up and buying the other moonwatch. The Bulova Lunar pilot has a speed master inspired design, high accuracy mecha-quartz movement and history relating to the Apollo 15 mission. For around £500 on the bracelet, you have a watch which can sit comfortably with other watches relating to space exploration. In the meantime, I'll save up for an Omega Speedmaster.

To me this launch is really something that comes from hype culture, it’s similar to what we see happen with sneaker releases several times per year, scalpers pick them up asap and flip them for profit on stockX or similar platforms. I do see a lot of cross over between sneaker culture and the people who are new(er) to watch culture, I knew this was going to be big when sites like “hypebeast” started to pick up on the story before the launch. Also in general these “hype” sites have been publishing more watch content over the past 1 year or so. I think this a very interesting direction watch culture is going.

The dye on the skin was on earlier models of a specific color or the moonswatch. Kind of a low blow with only several reported incidents and the company handled the matter very professionally. Much like you, I thought this was Swatch trying to bring a design to an affordable level that anyone could participate in. It turns out the quality is much worse than I initially expected, they're manipulating the market in a sleazy way, and the hype has gone beyond unsettling. Quite agree with a lot of your comments and observations. Especially that the Moonswatch was supposed to be the watch for everyone, but has turned out to be part of the exclusive club, like Rolex sports models. Shame.

A few years ago I saw a bunch of young adults waiting in a long line to buy a T-shirt with the word 'Supreme' on it. Fast forward and a new crop of consumers is waiting in line to buy a T-shirt with the word 'Hollister' on it. There'll always be a market for overpriced hipsterwear.

Well said: the Nekkid Watchmaker made a video about his watch's movement criticizing how it was never intended to be serviceable in any way.. Using a 10€ movement, battery included, on a 250€ watch made of plastic is like those poor quality cingalese made t-shirt with a huge Ralph Laurent symbol on the front sold for 100€: it's a scam performed by the same people that should protect a brand name. Even on the high end market it is not about giving the client the best product at a given price, but about making you pay as much as possible for the perceived value of the brand rather then the industrial costs of the components used. Let's be honest: Rolex and Omega are industrial products, far away from the quality of a Patek Philippe or a Lange and Schone, and yet, on some products, prices are not so much different to justify the purchase.

I'm not one to follow the hype. So when this moons watch was released I had no intention to stand in endless queues. Lack of supply has now increased my desire not to get one so, ultimately this novelty has died off for me and my focus is directed to more better made and functioning watches for the same price. Well done Swatch for killing off your newest creation.

Like you, I like the Omega brand (owning one) and to a lesser extent, the Swatch brand too but when I learned of this manufacturer amalgamation to launch the MoonSwatch, I was excited. I liked the idea because it was widely appealing with 11 models and that would make them collectible, over time. That they could be worn and not worried as much about because of their costs and construction. They would be fun, colourful and very accessible by most people who prior-to, many not have been a prospective customer of either brand. That was then though and now, whilst as you imply, this story is probably still moving or evolving; for me I think the launch has been an almost total failure, a flop and a very disappointing one too - for the “would-be” consumer. The product accessibility can now be compared with the recent graphics card “scalping” fiasco because it not accessible thus it is then, unaffordable and because of that, it is in no way fun. There is no ordinary way of purchasing one of these watches in the colour of your choice for the intended RRP. The exposure to this marketing and the resulting hype, lack of availability plus the plethora of in depth reviews (revealing some less than enthusiasm-inspiring thoughts further revealing certain product quality issues ie. dye transfer & strap quality / comfort - which I suspect in turn, is worsening availability - I would think manufacturing is being revised to eliminate such issues); I really believe this launch is and continues to be - a failure. It *has* served to heighten the dual brand awareness but largely failed for all other aspects. I am now starting to dislike the brand as a result of this failing scenario - which is the very opposite surely, of what this amalgamation was supposed to bring about. They ought not be bought in scalping scenarios and in my view, disregarded until they really are all of the things Swatch and Omega intended.

Isn’t it a sunk cost fallacy though? You spend 5 grand on a mechanical watch which then makes it almost impossible to dispose of when it breaks. You could be up for hundreds in repair costs that you WILL pay because your initial outlay was 5k. I mean, it keeps it out of the bin, but at a considerable costs.

For all these people bent out of shape that they can’t buy one, relax. The demand has been overwhelming. I have been traveling Europe this summer, and poke my head into the various Swatch stores I’ve come across, since there are none near where I live. So far, no luck for me (maybe lucky me, since God knows I don’t need another watch). The lines have been quite long with adult men when ‘delivery day’ is upon them. They are there for only one watch.

Some feel that this damages the Omega brand prestige, but I disagree. This is a $300 Swatch, sold ONLY in Swatch stores, and it's apparent to all but the most unwashed of masses that this isn't a real Moonwatch. 🤷🏽‍♂️

It's crazy to think that more people want the Swatch instead of the icon. I get where the argument is coming from though, without the Omega branding (design) this would just be another Swatch. Good thing it's NOT in Omega's catalogue ;)

I do really like the design and colours of the Moonswatch but the quality of these is ridiculous, its almost like they are the tamigotchi of the watch world. Better look after your Moonswatch properly folks, the cheap fused plastic crystal can't be replaced! The hype is more annoying than anything, I don't think any less of the actual moonwatch unlike other folks who are ranting about selling their Speedmasters in other corners of the internet. It has probably done wonders for Swatch boutiques bottom lines too, but in the end the court of public opinion is probably quite positive amongst the non watch enthusiast crowd. As another commenter mentioned all the Seagull and Sugess chronographs are way better for the money and come in many interesting designs with a proper mechanical movement, just change the strap like on virtually any

The swatch got me into watches honestly, I’ve purchased 3 since the release of the moonswatch. I had a friend who went for the grand opening to get me one and was sorely disappointed they only had 70 and they were already spoken for. I wanted this because I’ve wanted a real speedmaster but didn’t want to spend the coin to get one. But instead of getting a moonswatch and then eventually getting an omega, this bungled release made me not want one at all. Now I have 3 Japanese watches and 2 Swiss watches. This turned me off of omega, at least for the short term.

it was a great idea for the collaboration! I wanted one, but given the BS, the stupid flipping, the SWATCH fiasco release, and the flip/flop online sale vs. boutique only sale - I am over this watch. Completely BS. For the record, I have two Omega Speedmasters (Speedy Pro 1861 and CK2998 LE) and if I could pick one up to throw on my wrist sure, but not with all the BS surrounding this release. I don't need or want this hype/flipping surrounding these watches

I think they are unique and very interesting and I want one. I would be happier if they were $100, or even $200, but I will buy one at MSRP when that is possible. I've owned 4 Omega in the past and only own one now. Most of the problem with the watch is caused by Omega/Swatch and their sales policies. I am not in favor of any company limiting sales through whatever means in order to increase demand for the product. If you are going to manufacture and sell a product, then manufacture and sell the product. If you toy with customers then someday you might not have any more customers. The people who want a moonswatch today might decide to buy a real moon watch, or they might decide to buy a Gshock and never consider omega again.
@pedrotavares3299
@pedrotavares3299 2 жыл бұрын
On the Moonswatch. Yes, it is build like a swatch and, yes it is overpriced as such. But Omega branding and design justifies the price, I guess. So what is the real problem. The Swatch group transformed a terrific idea, with the moonswatch gaining plenty attention and a lot of interest, in the worst marketing strategy possible. First they only deliver to boutiques, so you have to be near one to try to buy it. In Lisboa we have one that is receiving 30 to 50 units, 3 times per week. However, the watch is close to impossible to buy because they refuse to make a waiting list (Portuguese importing company says Swatch does not permit waiting lists) and they do jot advertise when a new batch is arriving. As soon as the a new batch of moonswatches reach the store they are sold within 30 to 45 minutes. As the boutique is in a big mall, it is obvious that it is quite easy for “mall personnel”to buy the watches and make a profit in the secondary market. So, swatch is not interest in selling to normal persons, enthusiasts and/or collectors that want the watch for themselves. Curious enough, you can order other swatch, omega, or any other watch from the swatch group. I decided that they can keep their omega plastic copy.
