I worked as a sheet metal mechanic at Hollywood aviation in California, converting various Convair to turbo prop planes. We made the nacelles out of stainless steel built in jigs. Good work.

Back in '68, I was stationed at Laredo AFB. Several times a year, I would fly home to Dallas on a Convair 600. Always a wonderful experience. Nothing but warm memories of that amazing airplane.

After Vietnam I worked on these and we referred to them as screaming meanie because if dart engines. The CV-580 had Allison engines basically the same as the c-130.

Excellent posting! I remember these back in the early '80s flying for an airline in the northeast US called Bar Harbor Airlines. They flew the CV600. My Dad was a Capt on the CV600 for Bar Harbor.

Such great memories of my childhood. These planes were ubiquitous at our airport in the '60s. I remember them buzzing overhead when we were playing baseball. What a schmuck I am, huh? I'm getting so nostalgic in my old age.

@@donaldstanfield8862 Yeah, I remember smokey Phantom jets and orange-tailed Voodoos from Canada in the '60s, and I remember one sonic boom which shook the windows and cabinets in my grandmother's kitchen. Great times at the EAA every summer too. The loudest sound I ever heard was a Starfighter backfiring at EAA; it echoed throughout the entire valley.

The Dart engines may have been reliable but rigging the FCU was a nightmare, and God forbid you caused a hot start, as you would see t-wheel blade pieces flying out of the tailpipe. I prefer the Allison eng on the 540. Very nice video.

Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture Oh yes. Been one of your suscribers for some time. Keep up the great work. Flew the 580 for Frontier Commuter Airlines (DEN Stapleton) and also as a freighter a few years back. They don't build them like that any more.

I don't know the exact model, but Convairs with turboprops used by Allegheny Airlines flew out of my airport until the late 70s or early 80s. We live in a valley and, on good days, could hear those engines as the planes taxied for miles.

The 580 was strictly a conversion backed by Allison, so I don't think Convair promoted it as much.

Used to work the ramp and the CV-580 that North Central flew was MUCH better than the F-27 of Hughes Airwest (I worked both). As far as the CV-600? Forget it---the Rolls engine was underpowered and a screamer compared to the svelte sound of an Allison 501-D!
@johneddy9089 жыл бұрын
The loud whistling sound associated with the Dart comes from the centrifugal compressor, while the Allison T56/501, to the best of my knowledge, has an axial-flow compressor.
@Hopeless_and_Forlorn8 жыл бұрын
+John Eddy True that. In 1965, I was standing on the observation platform over the Yellow Concourse at Love Field as Central Airline's, and the industry's, first CV-600 taxied up, still in white tail. N74858 was not the first Convair converted to a 600, but it was the first to go into service, beating TTA's in-house conversion out the door. The Dart whistle I heard as it taxied in was amazing--much louder than the Rda-7 engines on the Continental Viscounts two gates over. As the crew started engines to depart, I watched fellow gawkers for their reaction to the endlessly rising whistle of the compressor. They all looked around to identify the source of the sound, and seemed unable to accept that it came from the innocent-looking Convair on Gate 9. I later heard a rumor that the Central Airlines agents in the ops room below learned that they had to keep the ramp door closed to talk on the telephone with a Dart outside. Seems Bell Telephone had just instituted a high-frequency audio disconnect signal to their system, and the Dart whistle mimicked that signal well enough to terminate conversations. In flight, however, the engines were quiet and very smooth, providing a nice ride for the passengers.

Yes, but Hank... we LOVE airplane noise!!! As a ramp hand at KLFT in the '70's, we serviced them all... recip Martin 404's, C240-440's, DC3-7's... but baby there was something about the 600 Darts that TIA was flying... they were so sexy looking and loud. When they went away and Metro came in with the 580 Allisons it was letdown.... TOO QUIET!!! (Thankfully we had a bunch of Turbo Commanders with Garretts on the field for our noise fix ARR ARR ARR, OOH!!!!) But the Dart's whine has a special place in my memory, so much so that I oftentimes watch the great videos in here of them. Check them out!

@@chas.fournet1087 I agree, someone saying 3,000 shaft horse power is under powered is just plain nuts. (Hank Fuddle). I was a crew chief on a C-130 A in 1964, now that is noise and if you like noise , crew member on a TB-58 Hustler with J-79's ( 1965-1966 ) real noise ( crew chief C-141A 1966-1968 ). And later from 1968-1991 on C-130 E's, at least they had ground idle to save fuel more than anything else. I, among very few crew chief's ( I know of about 2 ) was taxi qualified in the C-130 E, now THAT is fun.
