My SUNY Oneonta professor who retired like 7 years ago Dr. Blechman was so good at his craft and he always would grill into us to start at 200mb. You always want to work from the top down and there is truth behind that it a good many ways. He was so hard to beat in our local forecast contests each semester. A few over the years would consistently beat him and then you could pick somewhere in town he'd treat you too. I never got close to beating him as you needed to punch in the 24 and 48 hr high-low-precip amount and you'd count how much you were off and get error points for that. Precip had a different thing....but if you forgot to forecast one day you were screwed usually to ever catch up. The times my friend Alex won who I chase with and my friend Rich, we'd do bowling in town with Blechman for an evening and it was fun and we usually had one or 2 .ore tag along. We pay ourselves but he would cover the person who won. It was so much fun. Yeah...200mb map....that stuff he knew well.

Great story! Our guy who beat the profs got a forecasting job straight outta ISU, BS in hand, no problem. 😮😂 That's how it should be!

always a great watch Trey, would you be interested in doing videos on the pna/pdo/cycles/blocking regimes? ive done research, but you explain things so well and tie them in with each other i think it would be useful to help me understand long term patterns aside from just the visible jet streaks. Thank you!

Thank you! That’s not an area of meteorology/climatology that I’m super well-versed in; the extent of my knowledge on the “alphabet soup” of teleconnections is pretty much what I include in my annual tornado forecast video, but that’s about it. Perhaps at some point I’ll do some more research into that stuff so I can be more comfortable doing videos on them.
