Hmm, bands with metal "core" elements rarely grab me as well. I mean yeah, in high school I was all over that, but my tastes changed (although not that much). For me, it's more of an album by album deal since even the best hardcore influenced bands have their low points. I do listen to a lot of post-hardcore though. As for the metalcore side, I would recommend checking out 'Tree of Tongues' by Exotic Animal Petting Zoo. It's really unlike any other metalcore I've heard (both before and since) and it's still an album I occasionally go back to four years later. Totally underrated.

I need some advice. My friend told me to check out this band since I don't listen to metal like he does. And I want to explore this genre. I listen to more relaxed story telling slelectronic songs. I would say start with a few bands that got clean vocals, if u dont mind vocals being screams or growls, u can start by Melodic Hardcore bands or metalcore bands, If u want to really appreciate metal you have to go back and check some old metal stuff before going into Core

I'm kind of in the same boat. There have always been some metal bands I liked but I never really explored the genre very fully, especially beyond mainstream bands, so I'm trying to remedy that now by just checking out a lot of different bands. Some of it I really like, some not so much. There are so many sub-genres of metal too. One place you might start is google doom metal bands, you'll get a wikipedia list of a lot of metal bands you can start checking out. Like Stergios said checking out some old metal might be a good idea. I pretty much started all this with Black Sabbath. Another band I found that sounds kinda similar to old Sabbath is Witchcraft. I also really like what I've heard from Agalloch, mostly just listened to The Mantle and Pale Folklore albums so far.

It is and it is not. Well, hardcore punk is not the whole truth. They emerge from that genre, but they made something unique that keeps influencing most of the metalcore bands nowadays. It's really hard to label Converge, I would call them chaotic(experimental) metalcore.
