The nature of the image formed by a converging lens depends on the distance from the lens to the object.
If the object is located further away than the principal focus, then the image formed will be REAL. This means the image can be projected onto a screen.
If the object is located closer than the principal focus, then the image formed will be VIRTUAL. This means that the image cannot be projected onto a screen.
