The fact that Ndume is talking about timing shows that he actually do not want the bill passed. How can any sensible person be demanding that a bill be passed when people are no longer hungry? Has there been any time the people in Nigeria, especially the northerners are not hungry?

@@kadimosenye8830wtf are you talking about? No nation has ever reduced poverty through taxes??? Are you serious???? Sorry bro but that’s one of the most idiotic commentary I have ever seen on such a topic. Reasons being that the actual facts says it’s the complete opposite of what you said. Literally every single nation that has ever successfully reduced poverty mostly by investing on social programs and creating a business climate in its rural areas with grants and interest free loans , was only able to do so with the taxes it collected from its citizenry so again what are you talking about? To be clear I do disagree with this particular tax reform bills my reasons are numerous but the most apparent is its failure to more broadly target corporations who uses offshore entities to receive payments for service they rendered in Nigeria, therefore avoiding significant capital gains tax. But to come out here and claim “poverty has never been solved with taxes” is the height of absurdity

He needs to have an open dialogue and bring his ideas into play, he has already triggered his fellow lawmakers with his actions, even though he might have ideas that might be genuine, his actions has been determined negative. @sirrainbow16723 сағат бұрын
Senator Ndume is fast as using the US Senate as an example each time is either on this program or on the Senate floor. First of all there is never a time the Senate in the United state is so confrontational an neither do you see seating senator running in an out of the television house to discuss the Senate proceedings. During yesterday's session you could hear the Senate President calling on members to go back to their4 seats like school children. Such behavior should never be seen within a body of lawmakers. When member come on the television they should be very mindful of what they say about the Senate itself and the members. In fact it is counter productive for senators to be discussing on public television on bills that are being looked into. It has become a habit of Senator Ndume that as soon as he has an encounter on the senate floor he runs to the public television, this is risky. I totally disagree with the Senator on his objectional about the timing in the sense that the president campaigned on reforming the tax system in the country and hence he set up the tax force committee to work on it. The committee now have the report ready and there is absolutely no reason why it should not be worked on. The Chairman of the Committee informed the Senate that all relevant bodies agencies, civil society organization were consulted during the course of developing the bills presented to the Senate. Why are leaders and governors from one section of the country now opposing something that they were earlier consulted on? Senator Ndume has the right to oppose any bill on the senate floor but the majority will always count. What brought about the argument on the senate floor was uncalled for and cannot be equated to an ambush as perceived by the Senator. The passing of any bill that supports the president's commitment during the campaign should always be given a priority. The opposition I see from Senator Ndume all the time ought to be coming from the opposition parties in the Senate and that is not expected of a party with the majority.

He told you why he didn't want the bill to pass. It all about the centralized system and the tax intelligence. Using technology to collect tax. I do agree with him on one thing. They shouldn't raise the corporate tax raise, A couple of false statements. Higher taxes actually reduces inflation. The inflation in Nigeria is caused by higher energy prices and higher exchange rate. But higher taxes will affect job growth. In America senator, tax bills are passed by simple majority. You can't filibust tax bills. Even if you filibust a bill. You can override the filibuster with 60 votes. Filibuster is when one Senator holds up a vote. So that was a false statement. Also VAT in Ghana is not 3 percent. It is like 15 percent. While in Nigeria it is currently 7.5 percent.

Senate should go thru the documents and prepare questions that are ambiguous and seek further clarification. The purpose of any tax reform is to take out grey areas and then their will be a public reading where Nigerians will scrutinized the document. One clear point from the reform initiator was that the tax reform will push the burden of taxation to those who have the ability to pay. Taxes should be progressive. That is what it is in other parts of the world. The sentate shoud do a detailed work. Nigerians are watching. Let hope the rich will pay the proper tax going forward.

Or when is it the best time to reduce tax burden on the poor iif not now, when is it best time to remove VAT on the foods and other basic items if it not now? The narrative Sen Ndume is pushing is that it is going too quickly. So he wants the tax bill to stay another 10years like PIB bill. How can you leave fiscall consideration out of these reforms if you are serious about governance. Clearly we do not have time for that. We need a working ane comprehensive tax bill, and the tike is now. Governors and other elites may stand against the tax bill because it focuses on taxing them the more who are rich instead of the poor.
