Shortcuts are really a step forward. I also think that some of the back-end changes that we saw with iOS 13 i.e. suggested scenes, iTags etc. are a foreshadowing of the HomeKit home actually becoming smart automatically recognizing accessories and their micro-location offering practical scenes and automations based on other accessories in our homes and our habits.

Thanks for watching Billy. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a good way to do that. Timers are tricky in homekit and even harder if you are trying to control the Apple TV. You can try the "wait" action in shortcuts, but that usually doesn't work well for anything longer than a minute or so.

Shane-another fantastic video and clearly I need to spend some time learning more about the power of Shortcuts! Is there a site or video you recommend for a deep dive in learning in-depth about Shortcuts? Also, I sold my HomePod over a year ago when I discovered I couldn’t get it to play music as my alarm. With these shortcuts/automations, I’m guessing it’s now possible to set a shortcut to play music as soon as your alarm goes off but do you know if that’s the case? That would make me look at getting another one (or two). Thanks again!
@ShaneCreates4 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! Yea, shortcuts are so powerful and even I feel like I've only scratched the surface. I don't think an alarm itself can trigger a shortcut. I know when an alarm is "snoozed" and "stopped" can both be triggers. I use the snooze alarm trigger every day to turn on my homekit morning scene. You can also include playback to your HomePod through HomeKit automations that can be set at a specific time. You could potentially use that as an alarm I suppose. Regarding shortcut resources for a deeper dive...here are a few that I know of: -Matthew Cassinelli - has a youtube channel and lots of shortcuts and resources on his website. He does amazing things with shortcuts. - Tech Craft - youtube channel that has a good beginners guide to shortcuts video series. - Siri Shortcuts Field Guide by David Sparks - an in-depth, $29 course on shortcuts. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Great video. Been working with siri shortcut to. One thing wondering me, though. On the movie shortcut, you wake te Apple TV at both the Netflix and Disney plus. Why not fire it right before you start the "choose from list"? I have learned a bit of programming (c#), and one thing I've been told, is that you may not do the same thing more than one. //Paw
@ShaneCreates4 жыл бұрын
Yea, that should work too. It doesn't actually do the same thing more than once. It will only perform one set of actions or the other depending on which you choose, so this also works. But I am indeed NOT a programmer so... 😃

Thanks Amy! Try using the "set destination playback" action to have music play on the TV (assuming it's and airplay tv or connected to Apple TV). Some things have changed in the past 6 months or so with the way these shortcuts operate on the HomePod. There have been some big changes in the software of the HomePod, probably to prepare for the HomePod mini and new features. This might be a good video topic to revisit for a future video.

This is a really helpful and clearly explained video on shortcuts - thanks Shane! I do have a question though - in these shortcuts you are triggering the shortcuts with a voice command and I would like to know if you could trigger for example the "good night" shortcut without a voice command but merely because it is a particular time. I'm interested in this because when I used to use Alexa I could set an alarm that woke my children up with a weather report, turned on their lights and played a radio station (all without me getting my lazy self out of bed)! Thanks!
@ShaneCreates4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rafael! That's a good question. Simply put, the answer is no, you cannot have a shortcut run automatically at a specific time. You can set them up to run, but you will have to tap on the notification at that specified time for it to run. Through basic homekit automations, you CAN have lights turn on and pay music through a speaker at a specific time with no interactions, but not shortcuts. To go deeper on this, shortcut automations generally require some sort of input. What you are looking for is an option called "Ask before Running" when setting up a shortcut. However, this option is not available for all automations. It is available for automation triggers such as CarPlay, NFC, When low power mode is turned on, etc. but NOT available for triggers such as Time of day, leave, etc. The main difference being triggers that require some sort of input...if that makes sense. So if you set up a shortcut to run everyday at 6:00am, you will get a notification on your phone at 6:00am that you must tap in order to run the shortcut. On the other hand, a shortcut can be set up to run, with "ask before running" turned off, that can run automatically everyday when you snooze your alarm. Hope that makes sense.

This is brilliant however also demonstrates the weakness of the system. I played around with the Good Night automation and had similar results as other people. When answering 'no' to the alarm query it would do nothing and not complete when using via my iPhone (which is what I have with me in the bedroom). Meaning: it would not turn off an alarm that was turned on. When triggering it via the HomePod (which lives in the kitchen) it worked perfectly. Guess this shows how inconsistent the Apple stuff unfortunately still is. If it works via one device it should work on all you'd expect. Brilliant work however ... got yourself a new subscriber in me.
@ShaneCreates4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Guido! Yes, unfortunately there are still some definite inconsistencies across devices. I'm sure stuff like this will continue to improve but it can be frustrating in the meantime. Really not sure why your phone would give you trouble with this one tho. I use it all the time (I also don't have a HomePod in my bedroom so I use my phone). But like you said, if it works on the HomePod, it should definitely work on your phone also. As an alternative to the "choose from menu" scripting action, you could try the "ask" scripting action followed by an IF statement...maybe you'd have more luck with that one. Anyways, thanks for watching and subscribing!

Thanks Burak! Yes this should be possible, it just requires some more steps. Vito D I've heard similar things from other people. Not exactly sure what make siri act the way she does sometimes. For example, mine doesn't say "your shortcut says" at the end of mine but I do get that for certain actions in other shortcuts. My only guess is that it's related to the Siri voice you have set in your settings. My Language is set to English (United States) with Siri Voice set to American (Female). If you just want Siri to say something like "goodnight" you can also try using the "Speak Text" action instead of "show result" action. However I find this option to sound very robotic.

Great Video. I have a different question for you though. I have set up my VOCOlinc humidifier to go on every night when I run my Good night shortcut, but I can't find a way to add a timer for it to go off after certain hours since I don't want it to run till morning. So for now, I am manually setting the timer in the link wise app once it turns on. Do you have any suggestions how I might be able to add the timer for it in my night shortcut?
@ShaneCreates5 жыл бұрын
In the linkwise app, you should be able to set schedules for the flowerbud. I actually have mine set in there to come on and shut off at specific times throughout the week. If you haven’t already, try setting the “Turn off flowerbud” schedule option for every night and see if that does the trick.
@tarkikpatel5 жыл бұрын
Shane Whatley thank you for the reply. I’m aware about the setting the schedule, but the reason why I’m not using it because I don’t want it to run at night when I’m not home as it might be out of water and I could damage it. That’s why I was kinda looking to find a way that could combine with my night shortcut and every time the night shortcut was enabled, it would recognize it and stop the flowerbud after certain hours.

Hey, nice video! I am currently working on a script which does the following: When I turn off my alarm: Connect to Sonos One; Turn on bedroom lights; Siri tells me what the weather is for today; Siri tells me what upcoming events I have for the day; Music starts playing from my playlist. When running the script everything goes smoothly, but when I run it including the trigger (turning off my alarm), the audio is coming from my iPhone instead of my Sonos One. The music does come from the Sonos One. Any suggestions? Or can you test whether it does the same for you?
@ShaneCreates4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks! Since you are connecting to a speaker, it sounds like you should try the "speak text" action to have Siri give you the info. Then put all the weather, events, etc. in the "speak text" action. Hopefully that helps.

I followed your video, very good by the way, and can’t seem to get it to work. A few questions. Will Siri only speak through a HomePod? Is this why I hear nothing when I run it? I am using my iPad currently. I do get the weather forecast (text, not spoken), but no calendar items. Any ideas why? When you set the routine to read upcoming events on the calendar. It didn’t show any events. I also added to that yes/no function for Siri to say/show that there were no events on the calendar if there were no events. Neither result is shown. Any ideas as to why this does not work.
@ShaneCreates5 жыл бұрын
Hey Clifford. Thanks for watching! No, Siri will speak through any device if you use Siri to run the shortcut. If you tap the shortcut on the iPad it will run using text. If you use "hey siri" to run the shortcut, Siri should speak all the results. Regarding your problem not getting the calendar items, it's hard to know for sure without knowing more. My guess, if everything else is set up right and you are not getting any errors, is that you forgot to call up the "text" that we created that includes the calendar info (see around 10:00 in the video). I added that in the Choose from Menu prompt, right before mentioning the weather. Now, if you created an additional "text" action for if there are no events, you will need to add that one here as well. Hope that makes sense. And hopefully that helps!

I don’t really know what the common denominator is in that. It seems like it’s gotten better recently for me. The only thing I know to check is to make sure your HomePod and phone are updated to the latest software versions (should be 13.3 on both right now I think). Also maybe check Siri settings on phone. The first automation does require an Apple TV since it is opening apps on the Apple TV. You don't necessarily need a HomePod, you could run the automation from your phone or iPad too. The second automation (good night shortcut) doesn't require either. You can run that from you iPhone (actually what I do most of the time since I don't have a HomePod in the bedroom).

Gladimar Simeon in theory you could set the brightness,add a “wait” action, then repeat over and over in a shortcuts gradually reducing it each time. I also found this article that explains how to create a scene in the hue app, then add it to shortcuts. Looks like you have to use a 3rd party hue app to create the fade but I think this would work. Possibly smoother than trying to do it manually in shortcuts... techheroesinc.blogspot.com/2018/11/finally-siri-supports-transition-times.html?m=1

I don’t use ambient sounds much, but as far as I know, I don’t think you can add them to automations or shortcuts. It could be a number of things I suspect. There seems to be some problems with the HomePod, especially regarding shortcuts, since ios14 released. The HomePods still haven't been upgraded to version 14, except those that are running betas on the HomePod, which can present whole new problems. "Movie Night" shortcut does not perform as it should on mine either right now. I'm hoping these small issues will be worked out once the HomePods get updated and all devices are running on software version 14.
