Hannah Heather, part of the 24-7 Prayer movement, was able to sit down with NT Wright and ask him about prayer and theology - everything from his personal prayer life to some of his insights into how prayer works.

The Believer's idea of prayer is as follows. He prays for an event A to happen. Event A happens, and he claims " God answered my prayer". He prays for event A to happen, and event B happens. The Believer says " God considered my prayer, and in His Infinite Wisdom, decided that it was in my best interest that event B should happen" The Believer has covered himself in both cases.

There is only one prayer which needs to be said, and that is "Thy will be done" in the Lord's prayer. If God answers His own prayer, everything which happens is the Will of God. In the two thousand years since this prayer has been said by billions of the Faithful, we have had wars, famines, natural disasters, genocides, pandemics and so on. All this is the "Will of God".j To claim otherwise, is to admit that God does not answer prayer.

The Lord's Prayer, the most famous prayer of all, had a strange origin, which casts severe doubts on its importance. In Luke 11 we have "One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." And Jesus taught them the Lord's prayer. We would not have the Lord's prayer, if one of the disciples had not asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus obviously did not think the prayer of much importance, or else he would have imparted it to the human race at a much earlier date. The elevation of this prayer by Christians to one of supreme importance, is unintelligible.

Hey Brother, I appreciate you putting these thoughts forth. Jesus also teachings the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6, during his sermon on the mount. Many see this as Jesus’ manifesto on kingdom living: most of His teachings gathered in one sermon.
