He is also the author of the Broadway play As Is, which earned him a Drama Desk Award in 1986, an Obie, as well as Tony and Pulitzer nominations for best play.

One of the greats. I heard her often at Covent Garden in the 1980s and 1990s. A superb, rich and very agile mezzo and her Rossini has not been equalled. Like Sutherland she had a real trill.
