A 50 minute lecture and ensuing discussion with Josephine Hubbard and Lisa Walker, researchers in the SETI-Templeton Humpback Whale Research team, an interdisciplinary team of biologists, musicians, artists and physicists, who seek to understand the communicative complexity, intelligence and flexibility of humpback whales.
This talk discusses what characteristics humpbacks possess that make them a great model for understanding interspecies communication, informed by recent interactions and playback experiments with humpback whales, including a unique encounter by the research team in Alaska in 2021.
This video is part of the Interspecies Conversations lecture series. A regular online lecture series that invites leading professors, scientists, researchers, and students to share and present their work around interspecies communication and approaches to deciphering the signals of other animals. It aims to showcase emerging ideas and discoveries and include open discussions where the community can join the conversation with ideas and feedback.

I play my flute to the humpbacks as they migrate south along the coastline of eastern Australia. Over the years we have had many moments of profound connection and mutual curiosity with many muggings and spy hopping. Meeting the whales eye to eye is something completely euphoric, beyond words - a powerful affirmation of our co-existence. I am so grateful to find this group and would like to connect with others.

Can you imagine walking along a dirt path to your house like you always do, and out in the woods nearby you hear either your voice or a voice of a friend go "hello? Is anyone there?" On repeat. Chilling. Hopefully they understand it is human attempt at communication lol.
