@tylerrussell81445 жыл бұрын
KDK twelve it is perfectly ok! The reasoning is for chain tension on a fixed gear bike as they do not have a regular "deraileur" to tension chain. Moving the wheel horizontally creates tension. I have a single speed cannondale with a rear tensioner because I don't have these horizontal dropouts.

I love this video. I don't know how you managed to really center the slots, I would have cut them like 7-8mm wide, have some kind of jig where I can brace the seat tube tight and level it vertical, while bringing the BB shaft and drops at about level. Then fine file the top part of the slot left and right so they are level with each other, then file the bottoms to match the 10.1mm slot on the bottoms, use a 9mm front wheel to check center while filing. It came out OK so I assume you did measure things out not shown on the video.
@PatonHaus5 жыл бұрын
I did measure and scribe the slots, and I'm fairly confident using an angle grinder for accurate work. Both slots came out well and were nearly perfectly aligned front to back and in height. The next time I do something like this I'll buy some laser cut drop outs and braze them on.

PatonHaus my real question concerns the strength of those drops. Not much knowledge of metallurgy.
@Metal-Possum6 жыл бұрын
Those aren't vertical dropouts, they're horizontal dropouts. They're more or less horizontal already, with room for adjustment. The reason they're called dropouts is because they let you (wait for it) drop the wheel out. Horizontal FORK ENDS, as you are fitting, are not dropouts, because you can't drop the wheel out of them, instead of you have to fiddle around a whole lot more to get the wheel in and out.
@PatonHaus6 жыл бұрын
Those are all excellent points. I enjoy the occasional wheel fiddling, so that's okay. Come back anytime!

@PatonHaus6 жыл бұрын
The metal is the same gauge as the old dropouts, so strength shouldn't be too big an issue. I'm not sure what grade the steel is, but it's not going off-roading, so I think it'll do just fine.
