Converting a mains powered TFT to run on 12v

I bought an old 1280x1024 SVGA TFT monitor to hook up to my car PC for watching films in the back. It runs on mains 240v AC only, so I did a little bit of hardware hacking to make it run directly from 12v. This video is largely in realtime, so you can see roughly how long it took.
Apologies for the focusing noise from my camera, it's because I'm using the in-camera mic with a non-USM lens. I'll dig out an external mic to use for the next vid.

man I LOVE YOUUU !!!! i dont know how i did it, but i did it on an acer X223w 22inch monitor... it needed 12v AND 5v inputs on different soldering points. I dont have much knowlegde at this but it works perfect thanks to you :) many many thanks for this Video !!!!!

I was thinking to do this mod few years ago since i have my unused LCD TFT monitor. Glad it could be powered on with 12V dc!

You might have needed 5v as well. I converted an HP 22 inch to 12v. The high voltage inside read 20 when plugged to mains, however it worked fine on 12. I did also need a stable 5v seperate to 12v. Now I can use a good monitor that was destined for the tip, on the boat.

The vid was too long for someone who has experience in working with electronics, however is probably OK for someone who knows very little. whether someone who knows very little should be doing a mod like that is another thing. However, the vid did help me decide that it was quite do-able so I pulled a monitor apart to do it. My monitor was not as straight forward as the switch mode power unit produces +5 as well as the +12V Ie. it has two outputs. This can be fixed quite easily by wiring in a 7805 regulator or as in my case . I put a bucking regulator +12V to +5 for about $4 from ebay.

+Ansari Flight Plan If your switcher is a dual output voltage, you need to add a separate +5V regulator which is fed from the +12V input. A 7805 regulator or a small switch mode regulator (eBay) adjusted to +5V would be ideal.

this is what i need to do with my monitor, have a solar powerd set up in the shed and i dont want to have to use an inverter....( i can run the computer off 12v just not the monitor)
