Converting Flux Core Mig To Gas

Episode 008 is a stern reminder that rust never sleeps! There’s been so much hype around the passenger side rocker panel that we almost forgot to check the Driver’s side!
Hopes are looking high after removing the first panel and revealing the rear unibody in solid shape less the jack post. I have a bit of suspicion that there may be more to the naked eye especially with the jack support rotted.
With some cutting and grinding the middle and front ugly panels come off revealing more wonderful thin sheet metal tin.
While pondering just how much welding is left to do on the car I come up with an idea to convert my electric flux mig welder to a Argon/Co2 electric welder. After a bit of customization it’s ready for the experiment!
In the “experiment” I use the electric flux mig welder without the gas turned on and with gas turned on, visually demonstrating a clear difference in welds.
However....... I need deeper visibly better welds still so I bought a new 200amp welder and put it up against the old mig welder. In the end... I think we all know what welds come out best!

The Flux cored wire welding machines use reversed polarity , compared to regular MIG welding machine ! That is the answer why still don't weld good

So, are you still using flux core wire then with gas? Have you tried just regular steel wire with the gas? I guess it’s possible that your machine might not be adaptable to that...I know that on my Lincoln MIG, if I change from flux core to steel I have to make some polarity changes to the machine. I’m enjoying following along in your project.

Hey, Thanks for watching! The regular steel wire with gas is used on the last weld at the end it does work very well. I do believe the minimig and flux core wire play a role in welding body panels but onward to the future with the new mig gas welds!
