Convoy to Ukraine

Today we joined a national convoy organised by the National Fire Chiefs Council and Fire Aid travelling across Europe to deliver 3 of our retired fire engines and other urgent supplies to frontline firefighters in Ukraine. We joined Lancashire and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services which also donated vehicles and equipment.

In total the ‘UK Fire Aid’ charity has sent three convoys of fully kitted-out fire vehicles to Ukraine - all donated by UK brigades..... By EVERY UK brigade. The first convoy in March consisted of 15 retired fire engines, an Incident Response unit, an Aerial Ladder Platform, and over 5,000 brand new prices of firefighting kit and PPE; in April, 33 vehicles were sent in a second convoy, while May’s convoy consisted of 22 vehicles, that’s 60 fully-equipped firefighting vehicles. That’s an impressive tally. Don’t get me wrong, it’s brilliant that Merseyside FRS and GMFRS have donated, but they are by no means the only ones to do so.... every UK brigade gave.... even tiny Jersey sent two fire engines! So how can Manchester and Merseyside be “the pride of the nation” when every brigade has stepped up to the plate? It makes me proud to be British, not proud to be a Midlander. So come on, there’s a world outside of the north-west you know......

Fantastic gesture,proud to say my brother served almost 30 years with gmfrs Based at whitehill gorton chadderton and many other stations. Let's hope these vehicles serve them well like they have back here in UK.

In 1941, Churchill sent a letter to FDR that the UK would no longer be able to afford materiel they were receiving from the US to fight Germany. This led to the Lend Lease Act, which kept the supplies flowing. FDR sold the bill to the nation as a neighborly gesture, similar to lending your garden hose to your neighbor if his house caught fire. Looks like Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside are one-upping FDR by skipping the garden hose and sending fire engines. Good work, all!
