Conway Scenic Railroad 7470: Steam to Crawford Notch

In 2019, Canadian National O-18-a 0-6-0 No. 7470 returned to service on the Conway Scenic Railroad after undergoing a lengthy rebuild. The beloved engine's return was celebrated with two excursions through Crawford Notch, a rare trip for the steam locomotive to make on the former Maine Central trackage. Both trips are featured in this video, along with a photo freight operated for the railroad's railfan weekend. The 7470 puts on a grand show as it operates both as an all-day excursion engine and recreating its days as a switcher.

@@NortheastCorridorFilms It depends on what facilities already exist at the railroad in question. The East Broad Top for instance turns the entire train using a wye. Strasburg simply moves the engine from one end of the the train to the other in a run around move, like Conway. Cass simply shoves the train up the mountain and pulls it back down, never turning the engines or cars, nor changing what end of the train the engine is on. And Western Maryland uses a turntable to turn the engine(s) only, and then runs around the train.

It says Scenic in the description and that's exactly what you get - fantastic scenery. With that as a backdrop, it's easy to see why this locomotive is so popular. The high points are the bridge crossings, that spectacular downward view at 08:30 and the wonderful reflection at 17:09. The demonstration freight train was also a highlight. Normally, when they do the normal run to Faybyan in fall, they use #216 & #252, because they can be MU’d together for extra horsepower. #7470 was barely powering this trip, so they mainly used #252 & #216. If there was one (ex. 252), there wouldn’t be enough power. Only 2000 horsepower. With both units, the combined HEP is 4500, and also 7470.

The diesels are used for dynamic braking on the return trip, it's a 2+% downgrade to Conway from the Notch

ThatRandomUploader Around 180 are considered operable in the USA. At one point I recall the number being 176, how that finite number was reached I do not know, hence why it is usually phrased as around 180 or nearly 200. We are quite fortunate to still have this many.

@@jacobwoods8738 Well, the numbers keep rising almost every year as more and more money is raised for each locomotive to be restored to operational condition, so, steam will perhaps make a comeback pretty soon to maybe equal the amount of dieselized operations, who knows?

@@shanewalters2565 yup. Some of the steamers that were recently (as in 1990-2019) stopped steaming are being restored. Even some of them that aren't well known are even being reatored. They're even building a replica 4-4-4-4 T1 steam locomotive.

Yes it was. Not only was this one of 7470s first runs after rebuild, but it running the whole line to Crawford Notch is a rare event even normally.

History of me riding this train 2016 to 2019 I rode in Geutrude Emma on the valley route 2022 I rode Hurricane Mountain on Sawyer River route. I also really wanted to ride the Mountaineer too 2023: GBS, Mountaineer to Fabyans, can say I rode all main excurisons.

There are three whistles they often use on 7470. And she can have two mounted at the same time. So ots very possible its a different whistle than you heard.

7470 sounds bigger with that Grand trunk 6 chime which sounds a lot like MLW 261’s whistle which it still has but I think it’s been changed

I think I saw on an Instagram post from the Conway scenic railroad that they only have her CN whistle on her and don't plan on adding another. They removed the secondary whistle mount when they did her restoration.

Conway Scenic runs 7470 primarily on specials, mostly in September in October.

No one judge me but I know 2019 was mainly the year of the return of big boy 4014 but I'm kinda more hyped 7470 returned to service. I was starting to like it a lot when it returned to service and like it more than I expected. And even though I got the chance to see 4014 myself and get my hat signed by ed dickens and a picture with him when 4014 was in California I still kinda prefer 7470 that is now my favorite Canadian national locomotive. Also makes me miss my original favorite that I still have faith it'll run again in the future even though many people have told me this one might possibly never steam again

501 has been moved to the roundhouse and is now in the beginning process of restoration hopefully in a few short years she will be out with 7470 soon.
