Although it is an old video, it helps me a lot. Your comment to split foot change and rig flip (independent of the order) as long as they are seperated, is helpfull. I almost do them simultaneously. Thx!!

Thanks for watching! Definitely keep them separate like described in this video. Hope it helps you improve.

A long, long, long, long time ago when I first started to sail I only ever learned the strap-to-strap gybe and I've never been able to retrain my ageing muscle memory to 'step'. I hope the point you talk to at the end - 'step then flip' or 'flip then step' - will get me over this hurdle. Thanks for the vids - I'm an avid watcher and I haven't seen anyone else do ride-along or anything quite as useful. Stay cool.

Thanks Richard, really appreciate your support! You’re 100% right, nor so long ago people only learnt the strap-2-strap style, mix up up and play around with the gybes and you’ll improve no end! 👍👍👍👍

Thanks Cookie - for sending the link, I should have know you would have the strap to strap fully covered! Great video and explanation! I now like to stay switch foot for longer, just for practice riding switch foot - and then gybe again off a wave face, back in normal position. It has really helped my wave riding. Your videos have helped my sailing a lot! Hope to make it to Greece soon!

ABSOLUTELY need the step gybe in your skill set for light wind, when the chips are down, on a small board. I use the strap-to-strap for comfortable planing conditions. I use the waves or big chop to keep planing/surfing as you look around to see what's what before I switch my feet. I find that this skill allows one to work up to being able to gybe onto a big set wave with confidence. Believe it or not, I had an argument with the great Phil McGain over the merits of each while staying at his place on an extended stay in Maui a few years ago...he claimed that the result of a strap-to strap was a stall. I don't stall mine. Cookie, you have illustrated very clearly that this is not the inevitable outcome. Thanks!

Spot on Cookie! In the Gorge I generally do 100% strap to strap as it helps with the choppy short waves that we often get. I will do step jibes when the wind is lighter and the water is flatter. I’ve also always called the strap to strap a carving jibe - not sure if that is technically correct, but I can always get a more powered up jibe when I am doing it that way, it tends to force me into keeping more power in the sail and keep my board more pointed down wind with more speed. Again, probably just my funny way of sorting it all out!
@Cookiesports Жыл бұрын
They’re both technically “carve-gybes” - hence the names being “step” or “strap” depending on the timing. I see what you mean though ✅

Your videos are amazing, they help me so much. This year I have finally landed TWO fully planing gybes, after years of trying. Where I live (Canada) it is only windy enough to sail once per week, IF I'm lucky! So it's hard to improve. Thank you for all of your amazing content.

Hi! Really pleased to hear my videos are helping you out. I'll be back on the water in about 8 weeks I hope, feel free to drop me a message with anything specific you'd like me to make a video on! Thanks for watching and sharing the hype! Make sure you get out when its not crazy windy too, things like "the disco gybe" can be practiced and perfected in the light winds and will really help you plane out more often!

I tend to do my footwork while the sail is flipping. In this video you said that the best thing is to pick either a step jibe or a strap jibe, but don't try to blend them. I can do a step jibe the way you describe it, but I usually fall off a plane and flip the sail while the board is shlogging. I need to be quick about it, like you are!
@Cookiesports3 жыл бұрын
Being quick on the foot change is always key- but it tends to be far more reliable what done before or after the rig flip though- not at the same time. As you improve you'll often tend to develop your own things though which will often work you- but are not easily replicable but others!

Let me just say that I love your videos. Having live commentary with millions of repetitions, different angles etc, that’s really great. I am an instructor myself and I was missing such comprehensive videos to share with my students on non-windy days. I recon that your channel will just sky high in statistics in a short period of time. The challenging part will be to keep content coming to offer the viewers new materials. Keeping fingers crossed for you! 2 questions I have however. 1) will you cover also slalom/power gybe? 2) where exactly in Greece we can meet such conditions? We are looking for some cool place for autumn surfing in couple weeks. Would you be able to suggest/help looking for a place to bunk?
@Cookiesports4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maciej, Thanks for the comment, really appreciate your support! I hope you're right on the statistics, I've only been going to 2 months now and it's going pretty well! To answer your questions.. 1. I will for sure be doing one of slalom/power gybes/lay-down style- however before i do there are so many similarities with a more classic gybe- including the "formula of gybes" covered in another video. 2. I'm on Keros Beach, on the Greek island of Limnos. No centres open here this time of year but still some great sailing to be had!

@@Cookiesports Thanks for your reply. My only concern is that it's already late for such tutorials. Many people call a season already as you know. But keep the material for the next incoming one! It's always great to watch awesome footage from the water.

@@maciejg.8653 Thanks again! You're right the summer season around the northern our way is almost over, but these can stay on KZbin for years to come. I've almost finished windsurfing for the summer too, but I'm considering continuing this channel into other sports still using the "Ride Along" style, I'm a ski and snowboard instructor during there winter, and spend a lot of time speed riding!... Could make something fun there!

If you want to carve a bigger powered up area - it’s a step gybe. If you want to do a tight gybe in over powered conditions on a wave - then it’s a strap gybe. You’ll probably do one inadvertently. The strap gybe is a more advanced gybe as you are basically sailing inverted for a period - which is a skill in itself.

I don't think that both jibes are equally fine. To me The step jibe is by far superior to the strap jibe. the step jibe you can do, no matter the situation. The strap jibe, otherwise doesn't work underpowered and also overpowered can be very difficult.
@Cookiesports4 жыл бұрын
