You can always tell an old school cook. They don't have time to be bothered with complex techniques or supper picky measuring. They just know what the dish feels like because they have done it a thousand times, and they don't have time for nonsense. It's all about simple, and get the meal on the table. The love takes care of the details.

I have missed Cuban food so much. I didn't think it would be so hard to find a decent Cuban place in Texas... so I've taken to cooking it myself. Never made black beans on my own but this video was so easy to follow along. Your grandmother is a precious gem and reminds me a lot of mine when they were alive. The beans were exactly the flavor I was looking for. Husband and I enjoyed them for a long time. Thank you for the video. Everything about it made it feel like home.

Oh my Sam, watching your Abuelita cook put a smile on my face, it reminds me oh how my Dad used to cook the same way measuring everything by eye, come to think of it he didn’t use measuring spoons, cups or written recipes. By the way I also mash some of my beans even though some Cubanos say that it wrong to do, but I don’t like my beans too soupy they need a bit more body for my taste so I make them a mi manera just like your abuelita.

I love your channel. It has reconnected me to my Cuban roots back home in Miami. I’ve been in Houston for 11 years away from my grandmother who is quite a chef and it’s hard to find some good Cuban cooking close by at a reasonable price... And of course, I didn’t know how to cook this kind of stuff as my mother and grandmother didn’t like people in the kitchen while they cooked. Lol ... thank you so much for your channel and it’s authenticity. I’m currently cooking this bean recipe for my husband (who is an African American black man lol) and hopefully they come out as good as I KNOW ABUELAS beans came out. I’ll will give an update. Awesome!!! I love your Grandmother's style of cooking this (Cuban Black Beans) recipe. I admire the way she uses semi-whole vegetables in her recipe, instead of chopped. I will try her style of cooking this recipe. Except, I might use crushed fresh garlic cloves from the beginning of the cooking. However, I will do the other vegetables as she did. Using your grandmother's post cooking vegetable crushing technique gives a meat presence affect as the pieces are more noticeable in sight and taste texture. I will figure out the recipe's ingredient measurements.Thank you much!Eddie Hodges/ Philadelphia PA USA

If you don't have a pressure cooker you can achieve the same results by cooking the beans along with all the other ingredients in a regular pot on the stove. They will take longer to cook however. Simmer them for about 2 hours or until the beans have softened. Stir occasionally!

As a cuban born and raised this is the first time i see someone do it this way. when you make the sofrito with already used garlic and bell pepper u wont take any flavor from it,the pressure cooker already did.Yet it might work, i will give it a shot making it this way to see what happens
@aliciagonzalez79872 жыл бұрын
I agree, I’ve never made it like that , I make a sofrito on the stove then throw it in, I add crumbled bacon, and tocino chunks , and let it get thicker by placing it on medium high with the lid off, not bragging but they turn out delicious( I do add one half tablespoons of vinegar apple cider and one teaspoon of sugar) that’s how my mother made it, and that’s how I make

Could I use canola oil instead ? Also if I'm missing a couple ingredients like green peppers and the bay leafs would it still be fine?
@SamazingTravels8 жыл бұрын
Hi :) you can use canola oil, but it won't have the same flavor as olive oil would. Olive oil just has a more rich flavor. But the recipe should be fine! If you're missing green peppers and bay leaves, same thing goes. Those ingredients add to the flavor of the dish, but are not extremely necessary. I'm curious to see how the recipe turns out with your modifications, please let me know :D
