Tipper, thank you. I'm not a cook or a gardener, but watching you prepare the peppers for pickling and making the cake and hearing your voices, soothes me. I can tell that you love growing food and preparing it for your family, as well as your Church family. I love how Cori and katey(?) help you so much. I also thank Cori for her bible study teaching. I am older than all of you, except Granny maybe, and I resisted watching it because of pride. She drew the humility out of me as I listened to her sincerity and love of the Word of God. She had something to teach this old dog. I love you all.

My mother started teaching me to cook at a young age. For my 8th birthday she gave me Betty Crocker’s cookbook for children. I loved it. When I was 17 I told mom I wanted to make the entire Thanksgiving dinner by myself. I did it and the family loved it, but boy, it was a lot of work. It gave me a new appreciation for my mother.

I have to always wear an apron unless I plan on wearing whatever I’m cooking. 😂. I like to cook for others as well, especially for church. I made a pumpkin cake for my ladies this morning and they were tickled to pieces. Since I made up the recipe, none of them has ever had it. As usual, I made sure to bring a copy of the recipe to share with them.

Hey Tipper and Family! I finally got to make your cornbread! I currently do not own an iron skillet so I had to wait awhile to make it. O my goodness that was some of the best cornbread I have ever made or eaten! It made my Dad's birthday extra special. Next time I will have to make a double batch because everybody gobbled it up : ) Thank you so much for writing that cookbook with Jim Casada and for the sweet personal note you wrote for Dad in his copy. It made his 86th birthday one to remember. Our family wishes your family (including your fans out there) a gentle holiday season. Love you!

Yes, I hate kitchens with bare work surfaces. My tiny kitchen is similar to Tipper's with produce in various stages of preparation everywhere. Currently candying citrus peel for use in Christmas cakes, bowl of damsons ready to make into jam and to flavour gin, two big boxes of tomatoes to be turned into something delicious, oh and a few quinces to make into butter. I live on my own but love preserving and cooking.

Y’all had a really busy two days of food prep and cooking. That cake looked so delicious! Like Granny , my mom let me cook when I was young too and I still love to prepare, cook and bake. I find cooking very enjoyable and relaxing. I agree good food makes people happy and it makes me happy to see those I cook for enjoy what I’ve made. It’s one of my blessings to serve others with meals. I feel the same about my sewing. When I make a quilt for someone, there is no greater reward to hear them go on about it. I don’t make fancy quilts, and they are not even close to perfect, but when they turn out well and others love them, it blesses my heart beyond words.

We found that once you've been "burned" by hot peppers, you are more sensitive to them, and they will burn you faster. My husband once decided to harvest all our jalapenos right before vacation and cut them up. He touched his eye area, and he suffered that whole trip and has to be really careful now.
@CelebratingAppalachia Жыл бұрын
Oh goodness I know that was painful!

How do you neutralize jalapeno burn? Chili peppers are an alkaline food because capsaicin falls on the base side of the pH scale. This is why acidic foods like vinegar or tomato sauce can be used to neutralize capsaicin oil on your skin. Dip or rub your hands with an acidic food like vinegar, tomato sauce, or lemon juice to find relief. 😊
@KimOpperman Жыл бұрын
I tried bowls of ice water. I made up mixtures of vinegar and baking soda. Vinegar alone. Lemon juice alone. Vinegar or lemon juice with ice cubes. Sometimes I alternated between all of them. I finally brought the bowl of ice water to bed with me and drifted off to sleep around dawn. I woke up soaking wet from the bowl of ice water. This was way too much lesson learning. 😅

I saw a quote somewhere recently that said something like you can have a spotless kitchen or homemade meals but not both at the same time 😂😂 I identified with that so much! My counter tops are currently covered with apples and the dehydrator running non stop, as well as kitchen tools and bowls that never get put away where they go because as soon as they get cleaned I’m using them for something else! Loved watching y’all cook, always something good going on in Tipper’s kitchen! ❤

Another great video! I have quite a bit of knowledge on the black walnuts, my dad and some of the neighbors did a lot with them. Learning techniques to hull them and crack them and then all the different uses. The neighbors made handmade white oak baskets and would make stain from the walnut hulls for their baskets. Last year we were able to get some walnuts and I cracked them and put a bunch away in the freezer I am still using them for recipes such as yours they really add a good flavor to cakes and cookies. I know i ramble a lot in my comments (brain fog due to heart failure) but i truely enjoy the traditional things that you share and i fear a lot of this knowledge will be lost in the future generations.

I have to tell you my hot pepper story. When I lived in Denver, I made chili for a chili cook off at work so I was chopping up hot peppers to throw in the pot. My eyes began to water so I put my finger up to my eye without thinking! I ran to the bathroom to rinse out the painful oil. I wore contacts so I had to get the contact out and put it in cleaner. Needless to say, the contact was a goner. In those days I had to get new ones from the doctor. Yes, anything hot or a lot of onions involved, I use plastic gloves!

My mother wouldn't even let us come in the kitchen while she cooked. She did, however, pacify my sister and I by giving us a small bit of biscuit dough to play with while she cooked. Later, when we were old enough, about 12, I got to help with simple things like peeling potatoes or grating cheese. She was also very generous when it came to washing dishes. She 'let' us wash all we wanted. 😆 I love to cook now but it's only me at home so I don't cook often, mostly on birthdays and holidays. I love how close you and Katie and Corie are.
