Funny, I had just filled my Lamy and thought "Man, this piston seems a little stiff, guess it's just that way." I've only had the pen a month or so and it was a little stiff out of the box compared to my Pelikan's. Then I saw this video, talk about a WORLD of difference! Thanks Brian, it really is amazing how much difference this made for my brand new pen! It's actually BETTER than new now! :-)

So I just got my last 2000. Gave it the initial clean and used a neat trick to grease up the piston. I happen to have a couple of bottles of the liquid silicone grease that comes with TWSBI pens. Unscrewed the grip section and dropped a couple of drops of the silicone grease in the body. Operated the piston to spread it around inside the barrel. And that's all there's to it !

Thanks for adding your experience and safer greasing method which avoids the use of a Q tip cotton bud. Cotton buds shed fibres especially when they have to be pushed and pulled in and out of narrow openings. Those fibres will get into the capillary of the feed and screw up ink flow.

Total game changer! Just did this on my Lamy 2000 and it is suuuuper smooth now. It was starting to get tough to move the piston.

Something I already do when I don't want to disassemble the piston of other pens to make it a little smoother but I done this as soon as I got my lamy 2000, it makes it many times smoother than it was when new.

Brian, What prevents the silicone from getting into the ink and therefore into the feed? I thought it was a no-no to get silicone into any part of the feed?
@IR-xy3ij8 жыл бұрын
It's hydrophobic so the ink would not mix with the grease.

Just bought a new Lamy 2k and was wondering if the stiff piston was normal. This trick transforms use of the piston mechanism. Only a bit of lube is necessary, then swab it out with a clean Qtip and wipe off any residue. This transforms the action of the piston. Now, it turns easily. Lamy, you should do this at the factory... I have many good new and vintage pens, and the Lamy 2k (M) is excellent. I love this thing.

I just did it after seeing this video, and I wouldn't have expected to work so well !!! My Lamy 2000, despite being new, had a piston that was a tad hard to operate and was squeaking. Now it is smooth as buttered glass! Thanks for the tip, I have thought about it before, but I was reluctant to try it, my biggest concern was to put silicon in the ink reservoir, thinking it could alternate the ink flow. But it seems like it has no side-effects.

I'd imagine though that this method leaves excess silicone grease in the ink chamber beyond the throw of the plunger. Doesn't this interact with the ink in the pen?
@Gouletpens8 жыл бұрын

+The Goulet Pen Company and no it doesn't interact with the pen, it's an inert material. -Brian Goulet
@iamthebesfromyou7 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could use the other end of the qtip to remove the excess, the silicone grease is like a barrier. It doesn't mix well with ink, so you don't want to have silicone grease in your feed or on the nib as it will hinder ink flow. As far as interactions go, they don't interact with each other chemically.

Hi Brian, This is Joe, one of the winners of your Thanks-give-away contest last year. Really enjoying the Lamy 2000. It's become my everyday pen. I only use Diamine Majestic Blue in this pen. When I do grease it up as you showed, do I need to use the q-tip to remove the excess grease or is it ok to just ink up the pen and carry on writing? Thanks again, and really enjoy the videos.
@Gouletpens10 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe! Glad you're enjoying your pen :) When you're greasing it up, you really don't need a lot of grease on the q-tip, just a light coating. You're not trying to get globs of it on there or anything, so there hopefully shouldn't be much extra to have to remove. Make sense?
@UncleJoe322410 жыл бұрын
That makes sense to me. Thanks, again!

2014 I know... seven? years ago. What is the list of lubricating inks. I know that the Noodler's Eel inks are piston filler friendly. Is this true for house brand inks for piston filling pens in general? I know that my decades old Pelican responded nicely to Noodler's Eel Blue Ink. Both the piston fill and also the nib.

My first lamy 2000 and ink samples are on their way from Goulet Pens! Could I use an ink syringe to fill this pen via the same way this cleaning tip shows (directly in the body)?
@Gouletpens5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that but it would take some time for the ink to work its way down through the feed and be ready to write. The 2000 is one of the easiest pens to ink up with from the nib, so you don't see a lot of people doing it this way. - Colin
@neilspector92214 жыл бұрын

It looks like you should be able to do this greasing trick with any of the Pelikan piston fillers, because their nibs screw out. The main caveat is not to get any of the silicone on the nib.

What are your favorite inks to use in this, EF? I've noticed that the Lamy ink is way too wet and Noodler's is way too dry and results in regular hard starts. Pelikan Edelstein is the best I've found for it so far.

@fabiogulmini46642 жыл бұрын
If you've done that with armstrong gravitas, how did it work?
@peterhotzan10 жыл бұрын
This is not the best idea. It is too much silicone grease, resulting in poorer adhesion of the ink on paper, and the rod used in conjunction with many small fibers can affect the flow of ink. It would be better to use a pointed wooden stick. Only the top gets a little silicone grease. Best rotate the plunger completely down and then gently touch the edge near the piston. If necessary, this can be repeated.
