This week, it's the battle of the 50+ qt coolers. Ozark Trail's 52 qt challenges both the Lifetime 55 qt as well as the Yeti 65 qt. To compensate for the slight differences in volume, we gave each the same amount of ice and left them in the sun. After 4 days, we measured how much solid ice was left, by weight. The results were surprising!

Have to disagree; I have the Tundra, hopper 30m, 128oz rambler and the Silo6G and universally hold ice 5days+. Not sure why people bag on yeti. Yeah, its overpriced but if you're going on a week trip nothing beats it. They also have a great warranty and replace smaller parts at very very reasonable prices.

We just got a ozark cooler just like that one but has wheels and took it camping and it held ice for about 5 days and was in direct sunlight for most of the time and we was in and out of it constantly for drinks. We paid 150 for it. Deff more than I wanted to spend but then again I'm glad we got it no more ice runs ever haha

I’m not a yeti fan by any means, but this was not a fair test of the yeti. Larger cooler, more surface area, equals more heat load. Also, you should’ve spread the coolers out further so that the middle cooler was not shadowed. The lifetime is a great cooler for the money though.

Agreed. I wanted a Canada Goose coat because my kids play hockey. (I asked people I ran into who had them on and tried one on like Neiman Marcus or somewhere. Boy was there a difference in those coats and my normal one.) I seriously saved up for one for my 40th birthday. (Mind you I dont buy jewelry, everything is usually bought on clearance at gap, etc. Purses are from Boscov's which is fine also.) Ended up not getting one and now just layer up. Agreed, the empty volume is very important. In a modified test, use what MrTin suggests or a proportionally equal amount of ice (Example): Lifetime 55: 42 lbs Ozark Trail 52: 40 lbs Yeti 65: 50 Lbs (~0.77 lbs ice / gallon capacity- Providing proportionally equal ice to air for each test) Than measure the solid remaining ice against initial ice for a Percentage (Remaining Lbs of Ice/ Initial lbs ice)x100 This would equalize the coolers volumes and quantify more accurately how much better one cooler is over the other. ** Your initial results do show that the Lifetime is better than the Ozark (Given that the Lifetime is larger). But, it is likely the Yeti would outperform the Lifetime. Anyway, it would be interesting to quantify the difference on a more equal footing. additional separation with their lengths side by side would insure no slight insulative advantages from their positions. I would also insure and record the initial interior and exterior temperatures to insure they start on equal footing. (You probably did this) My 2 cents

I have the 55qt and 77qt lifetime. They are amazing. I brought extra ice camping Memorial Day weekend and after 4 days gave the 2 bags of extra ice to some buddies who stayed longer. And that was opening and closing to get beer, water and food out of them. Best value on the market.

This confirms that Yeti is only useful if you have critical food preservation needs, like if you're catching fresh fish and have a long trip back to land. Or if you're camping for a week and only able to bring one or two bags of ice with you. They look beautiful, but I'm very happy with the Lifetime that I bought.

I bought the Lifetime a year ago. I absolutely love it! However, your experiment as a flaw, though minor. The lifetime chest was set in the middle very close between the other two. You may not realize it, but that created a small insulating effect on the ends of the chest. If you'll recall, the 3 day check revealed that the Ozark and Yeti had more melting on the ends than the Lifetime. That's due to that insulating effect of being very close to the other chests.

Biggest issue I have with this test is that the yeti is largest cooler with the least amount of ice. More space for air means more heat build up. And even after all that it loses by a mere .3lbs. Is that worth $200 more that's up to the buyer.

I have two issues with this experiment. 1: the proximity of the coolers to each other. The lifetime was shielded from external heat on the sides. Not that that makes a huge difference, but I’m sure it was a factor. 2: The lifetime is smaller, so there is less ambient air between the ice and the lid. This makes a considerable difference when keeping food cold. You should always fill your cooler as full as possible if you want it to stay cold longer. Besides that, this was actually a good experiment. I’m sure mileage may vary from user to user.

I own and use a lifetime and I love it. Camped for 4 days near Shasta California and it held ice better than any of the cheap coolers or old school steel band coolers I’ve used. Having said that, I think the enemy of any cooler is dead air space. If that’s accurate, than the yeti was at a disadvantage from the start, but even considering that in my mind I will still buy a lifetime before I buy a yeti. American 🇺🇸 made, affordable price, holds ice for DAYS. Great video. I appreciate the fact that you went the extra mile and weighed out the remaining ice. 👍🏻
@treasurethetime2463
@treasurethetime2463 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. You can't compare different size coolers with the same amount of ice. It's physics. For a dramatic example, fill a Stanley thermos with ice cubes. Now take that same amount and put it in a 50qt cooler. The Stanley will have ice for days. The cooler for HOURS.

Thank you for the comparison. I wonder if being in the middle offered the Lifetime cooler some advantage by not getting as much sunlight on the sides. Regardless, I am 62 years old and prefer the weight of the lifetime cooler over the others. I was impressed with its performance too. It is disappointing to me that Yeti advertises inaccurate volume which is very misleading. Has anyone from Yeti ever explained what their volume measures really mean. Right now I have a 30qt Engel which is used in my trucks backseat and a 18 year old 50 Qt Igloo UltraCold that serve my purpose so Unfortunately I will not be buying any of these any time soon.
