The mighty Mongol empire had suffered some devastating defeats. But none are as embarrassing and dumb as their invasion of Java. This is a story of how the Mongols failed so hard at subjugating a kingdom, they created an even more powerful new empire with their invasion. Majapahit.

Majapahit arguably have the most unique history of kingdom in the world from their creation to how they run their kingdom. Majapahit literally born from guile, deceit, trickery and treachery. In fact this is become the most essential traits to anyone who want to rule Majapahit. from that environment born brilliant or clever person like Raden Wijaya or Gajah Mada and trust me, those guys is what you get if Nicolo Machiavelli create fanfic of the prince. What actually strike me is that, the generals who landed in Java did not bother to do a background check before deciding who to side with. If the generals had known that Raden had connection with Kertanegara, they should have at least liaise with Jayakatwang to see if he is willing to bend the knee. This kind of brute warfare seems different than the ones we used to hear during the warring states or 3K, where battles were fought with strategy and intelligence. This one is just pure stupidity for the Yuan dynasty, savages.

Because they have a list of tasks from Kublai Khan. first destroy Singhasari, this is typical mongol response to anyone who disrespect them or in this case harm mongol diplomat to show example and Daha kingdom of Jayakatwang is considered the continuation of Singhasari. Second, install more compliant ruler. Raden Wijaya fit the picture perfectly, he is cooperative, charismatic and most importantly he have the right to claim the kingdom. Third, extract tribute from Singhasari. By tribute it means princess of Singhasari as hostage to guarantee their loyalty. This is a bit problematic since Singhasari already usurped by their vassal kingdom of Daha, so they take Daha princess instead. Although they are fail on the big picture, they have all task checked when they sack Daha capital and install Raden Wijaya. The story not end there though few years later mongol send another punitive expedition with bigger fleet to subdue Majapahit but the fleet destroyed in naval battle by Majapahit and Champa alliance.

Kertanegara actually anticipated the Mongol invasion. But he assumed the invasion will come via land through Malay Peninsula and Sumatera. So he assembled a huge naval force to subjugate the Malay kingdoms in Sumatera and create a buffer zone. Little did he know that Mongol actually intended to sail directly to Java. Rumor has it, both fleets narrowly missed each other near Borneo. While most of Singhasari army away on the expedition, Jayakatwang took advantage and seize control of the palace.

I don't know if you are Indonesian or not, but you get all the main points right and your pronounciation of the Javanese names is awesome. If i may add, Jayakatwang was victorious because most of Singhasari's military were in Sumatra during a conquest, the battle against the Mongols was also conducted at sea, where Majapahit's fleet was victorious. After the Invasion, there were several naval battles fought and Majapahit never lost. Without command of the sea, it is impossible to invade Java.
