I kind of felt the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is more of a lesson on the cycle of chaos and order of civilization. From corruption to chaos, from chaos to order, from order to prosperity, and from prosperity to corruption again. Great portrayal of this historical masterpiece nontheless.

Agreed. It has many interesting takeaways. Not only a lesson on the inevitable cycles of dynasties rising and falling, but a lesson on "every person and hero, no matter how great their deeds, will be washed away by the sands of time and the only things that "last forever" are the mighty rivers that wash them away (told in the poem "Linjiangxian 臨江仙" that was added to later revisions of the novel). Liu Bei's story specifically is a lesson that "no matter how hard you try, you simply can't fight against the Will of Heaven/Heaven's Mandate (天命). It's a very poignant story.

There is no one in the base but he knew once he killed zhuge liang, the campaign would be over and shu would be destroyed overnight which then the emperor of wei wouldnt need sima yi and would strip his position due to his nature of wanting power. Zhuge liang also knew that Sima Yi wanted power and wouldnt want to end the campaign like this because he will get nothing so they both understand each other goals and thus sima yi retreated.

Romance of the three kingdoms primary romance was looking more like "Cao Cao: quest for them b*tches" for the first half of the video. Part two was "Zhuge Liang troll fest" followed by "Worst decision of 2/3 kingdoms" and finally, the suffering of the three kingdoms. Which proves that no one is perfect but even more, no one is exactly like another. Had they not been backstabbers and traitors, Wu could have worked with Shu to get rid of Wei, had Shu's leader not been overwhelmed by personal emotions, they could have worked together to get rid of Wei. And had Wei been better to their people, they probably could have survived till the end. But even then, Zhuge Liang didn't want to rule, so when he foresaw the corruption, he let it continue as he focused on trying to defeat Wei, Wu's endless betrayals to their allies lead to familial betrayals, and Wei fell to the same plot that their first leader had done to start off his own rise to power.

1:11:52. In the book, It is said that Cao Cao died because of the shock of seeing Guan Yu's head with its angry face staring at him.
219 - 223 was genuinely a series of tragedies. Xiahou Yuan, Xiahou Dun, Cao Cao, Cao Ren, Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, Huang Zhong, Guan Yu, Lu Meng, Sun ShangXiang, and a couple others all died pretty much sequentially(Not in respective order of how I listed them mind you). "Revenge is a fool's game" - Arthur Morgan If only Liu Bei had kept his emotions in check.

Kind of poetic really. Liu Bei died for the same reason his empire fell, blind loyalty And you can also look at it like he died when Guan Yu died, both him and Zhang Fei just needed to rush to make it official, so they could keep there promise
@tristanduggan6095 Жыл бұрын
This is where it's very interesting to compare and contrast the novel from the history. It's not all about emotions, historically speaking (even though the novel basically made it sound like he launched a counter-invasion in a fit of rage literally right after he got the news of Guan Yu). In fact, the Battle of Xiaoting (Liu Bei's re-invasion of Jing Province) didn't take place about a year and a half, maybe even more, after Guan Yu's death. Plenty of time for him to cool off his emotions. And here's why it was important for him to retake Jing from both a strategic standpoint and a political one, without any emotions involved: It's not a secret that Liu Bei had no actual intention of "returning" Jing Province to Sun Quan. Jing Province was one of the most, if not one of the only, prosperous provinces in China after their decades long civil war (still technically ongoing at that time IMO even though the Han Dynasty was officially ended by Cao Pi). It made no sense to give it up from a resource standpoint. Not only this, but Zhuge Liang's plan to invade Wei was hinged on them having both Yi and Jing province to provide two points to launch an invasion from. As much as he tried to make it work, he knew from the beginning that there was little to no chance to defeat Cao Cao/Wei if he didn't have both Jing Province and an official alliance with Sun Quan. This is why it was strategically important to control Jing Province. So Sun Quan decided to form a secret alliance with Cao Cao so he could safely order Lu Meng to launch a surprise invasion against Liu Bei while Guan Yu essentially left Jing Province unguarded while away on campaign fighting Cao Ren (a decision that wasn't unwise, considering it seemed like the Liu-Sun alliance was stable at the time). If Liu Bei didn't retaliate after Lu Meng captured his holdings in Jing Province and executed Guan Yu, it would have been a signal to Wu that they can just renege on their alliance, commit acts of aggression, and do whatever they want to with no repercussions. This is why it was politically important to try to take it back after it was lost. He HAD to do something after Guan Yu's death. He lost Jing almost without a fight, as many of his holdings simply surrendered or actively betrayed Liu Bei when they saw Lu Meng's army approaching. The alternative was letting everyone know that he's too weak to retaliate when someone acts aggressively toward him.
@gendoruwo6322 Жыл бұрын
Liu feng totally screwed up the Shu Empire when he inadvertently let Guan Yu be killed by not reinforcing him. Even if the campaign is lost anyway, Guan Yu could had been extracted alive. you had one job, Liu Feng. one job, and you totally screwed it up just because you're petty hearted and lazy. Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei are like 3 bodies, one soul. You let one be killed, it's the same as killing the other two. Betraying Guan Yu IS the same as betraying Liu Bei. Sadly, 'liu feng' types are common everywhere, people who think what they have is truly theirs, and got so drunk on power they fail to see the big picture.

Love the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I got my start with it from Dynasty Warriors, and very quickly started digging deeper into the actual story afterwards. It was hard at first because like... I was like 10 back when DW3 was released, but over the years its been getting easier and easier. Absolutely one of the greatest stories ever written, up there right next to the Iliad and the Odyssey as classics of ancient literature. While I'm super familiar with it by the time I found this video, this video makes a great introduction to people who want to get deeper into the story after discovering it from other sources.

i dont like how the Zhang Fei is portrait in the show, historicly he was kind of the rich boy of the three brothers, his familly owned a butcher shop and a vinery, in those times, hell even today if u own 2 buissnesses, you aint dumb or poor. he was educated . and Liu Bei was the one who beat the official. but i know this is romace version. great job, i enjoyd watching it ! here have a thumb up and a sub !

i can't imagine how much work went into this but this is nothing short of amazing work. Thank you so much! I have to thank KOEI for making their games for the PC and NES in the late 80's and early 90's for spawning my interest :) When Romance II released on SNES we had weekend parties of sometimes up to 8 players which was tons of fun. Everyone's fought to see who could get Lu Bu on their side first, who naturally traded about a dozen times throughout the campaign.

This was excellent! Thanks for putting this together. Chinese history, to me, is a good microcosm/macrocosm of how to and how not to properly administer a working administration. It shows what humans are capable of accomplishing, both "good" and "bad".

As someone who watch rotk, read their novel, play dynasty warrior, rotk game, searching all the info elsewhere, this is well explained. Thanks for amount of hard work you put into. I love these Chinese story for real. Just so sad the shu han benevolence kingdom crumble to the very down. In the game liu shan is still commanding army and charming leader. In Wikipedia he never thinking about participating in battle they have gotten into, well playing with the ladies and damn eunuch. Once again thank you, this is Masterpiece 🎉

Thank you so much for this! I try my best to relay stories about the characters and who they are via my streams of Dynasty Warriors but the pronounciations of names continue to stump me. It's great to have someone who knows how to get them right :3 also as a referesher this is great as it's a LOT to keep track of. You did the world a great service with this!

I have been a massive fan of the Dynasty Warriors games for years, with a special mention to Kessen 2 also. I can tell a lot of effort went into this video and it was great to recognise some events as they unfold in the games, whilst also discovering things I didn't know. Great job!

real piece of master work. I believe I can catch up without being a Chinese myself. The great thing is, history bro managed to not making the names of people and places a mess to the foreigners, and by using the great art work of faces, it makes the characters very distinguished and memorable, nice.

Just recently got into 3K seriously, played a few Dynasty Warriors back when but sitting down and actually hearing the story from start to finish is heart breaking, but thank you for your time and effort put into this, even if you never read this, the animation style was amazingly phenomenal and unique and well defined most characters very well, I had to watch it all, I really died inside watching Cao Cao/Liu Bei and his crew/Wu all just perish and their empires fall apart, I've never tasted anything so bittersweet in awhile...

Oh man, great job, thanks so much! Ps. One more moral, some people fight against something, but when they are overcome with pride, they become the very thing they were fighting against. That's why it's worth staying humble, otherwise, we lose our fight... with ourselves, even if we defeat our enemies.

A romance that has more plots than Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones combined
@Tharsix362 жыл бұрын
Seriously it's like comparing Mahabharata to Harry Potter. Those are two entirely different mediums. However what presists is the chaos vs order trope which is simply timeless. Edit: While I've only read two books from the saga of Ice and Fire I'd say that it has more plots than RotK.
@whatisthemeaningofthislife17582 жыл бұрын
Lol, RotK just like a civil war, but with marvelous backstabbing and politics. Game of Thrones is built different; politics/civil war (Westeros), conquest (Daenarys Conquest), Mystical Beast (Dragons), end of the world (Winter is coming). The show can't cover all, it only cover small part of world of ice and fire, game of thrones world is so big.

Having more plots doesn't automatically equal good. I wish we could get back to determining if a story is actually good or interesting, instead of modern day pissing contests of "most story"

No, the emperor did not send the blood edict to just Cao Cao during his escape from Li Jue and Guo Si but in fact he sent it to anyone that could reach him in time as he moved towards Luoyang from Chang'an and the letter reached to two of the nearest warlord, Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. Yuan Shao actually thought of receiving the emperor and both Tian Kai and Xun Yu both surprisingly agreed that that was the best choice. However, Guo Tu disagreed and even fervently talked trash about how the other two that supported it was dumb. Xun Yu stated that having the emperor is a boon as the emperor is weak and with Yuan Shao being the regent, he could make edicts in the name of the emperor and the emperor have no choice but to comply. Tian Kai then also added that because of that, Yuan Shao suddenly have the legitimacy of being the main regent as he has already been working for the previous emperor and have actual nobility status being that the Yuan clan has been working under the imperial family in high places for decades and even centuries ago thus he has all the legitimacy that he could become the regent of the Han Empire and with the emperor being in Luoyang, it would just take their forces 2 days of forced march to intercept the emperor and once they're there, everything would be fine and the empire could be under Yuan Shao's control to split, rule and conquer, all under the emperor's name. However, Guo Tu argued that the emperor is a curse and like the imperial seal, whoever takes in the emperor would be a problem. He brought out Dong Zhuo, Guo Si and Li Jue's name that all 3 of them held the emperor and while one was dead, the other 2 was in total turmoil and at the constant risk of invasion from others thus keeping the emperor for himself would only bring more trouble from the others to go and attack Ye. He also pointed out that regardless of what Yuan Shao's status is, his position was never higher than the emperor but if the emperor isn't at Ye, he's the highest amongst everyone. However if he was to bring the emperor to Ye as Luoyang was nothing but a whole heap of ruin, people in Northern China wouldn't bend down to Yuan Shao like he did anymore as the emperor would be the highest authority and whatever verdict and edict that he gave to the people of Northern China would suddenly be nulled as people would respect the emperor more than Yuan Shao himself if the emperor was brought back to Ye and Guo Tu even screamed at the other two for wasting everyone's time for even bringing it out and as they've just beaten Gongsun Zan, they din't have enough strength at that point to hold the invasive attacks that were bound to come if they held the emperor and it would be better for the "weaker" Cao Cao to take the emperor and let the others attack him and weaken him more. Yuan Shao decided to trust Guo Tu as he too believed the emperor was nothing but a curse and believing that it would make Cao Cao even more unlucky, he passed on the chance to Cao Cao which, was the biggest foolish thing he ever did as what Xun Yu had brought up DID happen. Cao Cao used the emperor's name and made edicts and soon after went for everyone's territories "in the name of the Han court" and unlike what Guo Tu had said, Cao Cao was relatively strong (Not as strong as Yuan Shao but still strong) after he gobbled up the entire of Xu. Worse still for Yuan Shao, all the unluckiness thing that Guo Tu had said even happened to Cao Cao as it was him who went after everyone and not everyone going after him.

Dang, Guo Tu sounded very logical but turns out he was wrong… Yuan Shao came so close
