The brief explanation of how these clutch fans work at around the 36 minute mark was much appreciated by many, including me. Thanks, Dave.

Don't beat yourself up, Dave. I'm sure those people understood. Anybody who knows a mechanically-minded person knows not to bug them when they are "in the zone." And sometimes, maybe folks think KZbinrs get approached everywhere and maybe they didn't want to impose. Always interesting to see what goes into keeping some of these classic RVs running. You've done the Coachmen proud as far as I can see. Talk to more people about what you are looking for in a project. People will help you find what you are looking for. Happy travels. 😎

Fan clutches were always going bad on cars in the 60’s and 70’s. We would always replace them with a flex fan. They increased air flow and you never had to be worried about the clutch going bad again.

I've done that fan clutch job several times and the water pump twice over 21 years. (On the water pump job, I still remember getting that power steering pulley off from inside the doghouse was very tough for me.) I thought the clutch was bad because my 95 was running hot going uphill. It turned out to be a 1/2 thick mat of plant matter between the radiator and the ac condenser. It ran at normal temp ever since. 454 is a great time proven engine -- before GM went computer crazy and generally crazy. Best of luck.

I knew the fan cluth would be more quieter!!! I bet you get a couple more miles to the gallon too?! I drive a kenworth and my engine fan was staying on all the time and i put a new fan selinoid (air operated fan clutch) on it and the engine was quieter and got about 1 to 1 1/2 miles to the gallon better because the fan was cycling!! That is huge money savings in the trucking side!! I enjoy your video's!!

I told you several videos back it was like night and day when I put a fan clutch on my Chevy Van! Plus I got better fuel mileage and had more power! ******* One other thing I noticed is that relay above the alternator (is that a starter relay?) or the emergency power relay for starting engine with house batteries? ******I noticed the red 12v signal wire was stripped too far almost touching the relay case****** It could short out if used!

Hi Dave, A wheel wrench that comes with most vehicles, might have fit down the hole to tighten the alternator.. Re: the VW engine.. The best I can tell the "F1" on the engine indicates the case started out life as a 1300cc, 50HP ASE, in 1966 in USA (66-70 elsewhere). The remaining digits / numbers are the serial number. Of course what it is now, how the case has been reworked, is something else. Elsewhere I found the F1 indicates the case is set up for dual relief oil pressure & 100mm oil galleries, but not that sure about that info. Info from thesamba, jbugs & thegoldenbug w ebsites Best regards, Dennis
