First time seeing the inside of a water tower chiller, looks and sounds so cool 😮

You should see a protech those are not so cool 😂

Lol, we used to have plenty . Good times , especially the itching after working on them.

Had an interview at Trane today for in house chiller tear downs. Man I hope I land that. 😅

Great Video as always. Thank you for sharing. What 's kind of water for use cooling tower ? fresh water , tap water or water mix with chemical ?
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
Chemically treated tap water, Thanks

The piping and the way its ran seems to always be an afterthought. I constantly run into poor piping practices...the building im on is a prime example....we do what we can....but dang....it can be a pain sometimes. Great video as always

There were some old wooden Marley towers there before, they just kept adding pipe to retrofit 😃 Thanks Jason 👊

I still dont know why they use butterfly valves as circuit setters? i would recommend a plug valve and set it up and use the butterfly as a shutoff only just my two cents

I work at a hospital in house and we have 8 cooling towers we work on. 2 are side by side and 1 always runs its amazing being inside the one beside it while the other is running. 4 Evapco and the rest are a different brand.

What a waste of water out of that overflow. Chemical guy hates you I bet… sump level didn’t seem to drop a ton on startup, can you get the fill level down lower without cavitation? Keep water from going out that overflow.

u could put a 90degree elbow facing up on the upper overflow to save that water and chemicals. cut ur pipe going upwards to set water level when pumps off so its not pouring down the drain and then doesn’t have to fill every time pump starts

Looks like all that water is just from the supply line to the tower draining out. Realistically it should have been run lower and then step up right at the tower, rather than horizontal straight out of the tower. If you want to fix it, you could modify the pipework feeding the top of the tower and install an inverted P trap (P going up not down) just prior to where it enters the tower. That'll stop the water draining out of the entire supply line, only what's left after the trap. Probably not cost effective for the little bit of water it'll save, though.

That makes sense , don’t think they will make the change though. Thanks for your comments 👍

Motor control group 26. Code 2606 SWITCHING FREQ increase it from default 4khz to 8khz this will quite down the motor.
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
Would that increase of temp at the drive be significant from 4 to 8 HZ?
@gregkaslow44195 ай бұрын
My ABB rep suggested this to me a few years ago when I had a noisy motor. But he advised not to set it past 8khz.
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
I gave it a try, nothing noticeable. Left it at 4khz. Thanks for sharing

Your float should have a nut on both sides to keep it from working it's way out. Those windage screens look plugged up too, should pressure wash those bad boys... Better airflow may cure that noise that you're hearing.

Seems like that tower could have neeed an auxiliary sump to contain the overflow as with most tower jobs that I've seen but this is not my area of expertise
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
🤔 a possibility, Thanks for the comment 👍

Man that was smart to change the ABB VFD ramp up rather then change the float! I bet that balanced out the system after that! Chillers wit cooling towers is the best commercial setup for cooling.

Surprised the system runs so high in the sump that normal stop start operation requires water loss out the overflow.

That honeycomb filter media has seen better days.... I bet there's plenty of problems at this site. Nice work on your part to fix the challenge and adjust the ABB Freq-Drive.

It’s due for annual cleaning, other than this issue not many problems… Thanks for commenting!

1-st reason of overflowing during shut down: drain pump is stopped, but water inside of cooling elements still coming; 2-nd reason: drain system is dirty and don't allow to suck a lot of water; 3-d reason: drain valve is closed about 50%

2:59 next time first wait until overflow stops then turn on the pump and then adjust the fill float otherwise the tank will still overflow
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately for now it has to be where it is due to the pipe distance otherwise cavitation starts, its far from a perfect setup . Thanks for watching 👍

Does the suction pipe which I assume is that big pipe that’s on the right of the evaporator tank not have a downward angled pipe connector so it sucks from the bottom of the tank (if it is just simply that hole in the side of the tank it’s going end up sucking air)
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
It has an anti-vortexing hood inside leading to the bottom of basin
@brauchmernet5 ай бұрын
Hm, maybe the falling water influence the float (until the fan starts) more then normal. I have changed makeup water valves before because of this. Mostly bigger floats to counteract the water from above
@subcoolHVAC5 ай бұрын
The float rod is closer to parallel at full than before now 👍
