High Efficiency Components for Cooling Towers, with John Junk, of FluidTEC. Presented at the Saving Water Partnership Cooling Tower Seminar in Seattle on June 24, 2011.
How to increase efficiency, save water, save energy. New, retrofittable plastic drift eliminators - don’t rust, reducing drift reduces harm to other equipment, they are more efficient, and reduce water loss from wind and water flow drifting out of tower. Newer nozzles - fewer needed, more efficient, more heat transfer, zero maintenance nozzles, can retrofit. Newer fill media - slows water down to gain more heat transfer, more efficient. Newer towers have it and can be retrofitted inexpensively. Fluid coolers and condensers - use elliptical tubes which give more surface area for better heat transfer and thus more efficient and gain more capacity in same space if needed. Finned coils for dry cooling; Eco-coolers that run dry some months of the year, to save water. Mechanical drive systems - Proper maintenance for longer life and leak reduction. Make-up water level controls - Electronic control that can tie into building automation system.
