The otherworldliness of Steeleye is captivating. Gives you hope.

Real folk sung as folk and real rock played as rock. Not many "folk rock" bands can say that, actually.

This (Prickly Bush) is a serious song about someone about to hang, yet Steeleye Span sing it utterly devoid of any feeling, but just in an upbeat boppy fashion. Maddy Prior is grinning away as though it is a joyful song. Quite bizarre. Listen to the Nic Jones version and hear how it should be treated.

The Time lp I find painfully naff. Twa corbies and the cutty wren redeem it tho.

@@coolrocknroll Generally, I preferred Fairport Convention. The John Renbourn Group was quite good as well, I think. I liked the Waterstones and when Martin Carthy joined them. The Raggle Taggle Gypsies by them is lovely as is Gloryland. Nic Jones is, for me, unequaled as a folk solo artist. Best wishes to you.

@@coolrocknroll Agreed those are the best songs. Cutty Wren is viscerally pagan - the voices sound non-human somehow.

Watching this epic concert in May 2017. This first track? is it a derivative of 'Gallows Pole' by Led Zep? Or maybe they based it on this song?

Well since Steeleye Span concentrates on saving old like really old songs you'd have to say he either made up his variation or borrowed it from them..of course in those times people performing would borrow each others material lots...good song recorded by one could then trickle down to others and there'd be 5-8 or so versions.
@robertdean6216 жыл бұрын
See also Gallows Pole by Leadbelly. (1939) All derived from traditional folk song. en.wikisource.org/wiki/Gallows_Pole

Steeleye are like Yes to Fairport’s Rolling Stones, they’re interesting but they don’t swing. Still a very worthy 2nd place IMHO (ducks for cover).

I beg to differ.

No need to duck for cover, the mighty Fairport are great but you must admit once Sandy Denny left they were never the same.
