I heard a big thud as something hit our living room window. When I looked out the window I saw a dazed sharp-shinned hawk perched on a flower pot. About 8 ft away I noticed a morning dove that also appeared dazed and wounded from colliding into the the window. What transpired next is shown in the video. The hawk couldn't kill the dove immediately because it was so big so it started eating on the dove while it was still alive. It was hard to watch and it made me realize that nature isn't always kind and this scene is repeated many times every day. Having a bird feeder in your back yard is also a dinner invitation to the hawks.

I had a cooper's hit a starling in the driveway! It decapitated it and flew off with the body! I hate seeing doves or cottontails get it they are so peaceful but such is nature!

The hawks have to eat too! They also help keep vermin under control.

I'd like to correct what I said in the last comment about the spot where I'd want to use your film: it's at 1:35. I read all the comments about identifying this hawk, and I have to agree that it's probably a Sharpie. I'm not much concerned about that, though, since the two are so similar in looks and behavior.

it has the head of a coopers hawk, but smaller legs and talons like a ss hawk. overlap between the two species is further complicated considering female sharp shins are close to the size of male coopers hawks.

@@whatweshouldknow5648 I love Nature. Predatory birds are wonderful creatures, they kill to eat... to survive, to feed their young. Humans kill for the pleasure of it.

We have sharp shinned hawks here in South Texas and 99% of the time they go after sparrows. You caught this guy with a lot of luck.

I believe that it is a Coopers Hawk, and not a Sharp Shinned Hawk. They are often confused as they do look similar. The eyes of a Coopers Hawk are black pupils, with yellow. The Sharp Shinned Hawks have red eyes, and the tail feathers do not form a band, or stripes near the base.

James H but an immature sharp shinned hawk has yellow eyes like the coopers hawk. After the first year the eyes turn red. This cohld quite possibly be a sharp shinned hawk. The head size though, makes it more of a coopers hawk. A sharp shinned hawk's head looks too small for its body. A coopers hawk's head looks too big.

Definitely a Sharpshinned Hawk in immature plummage. Square end to the tail ( not round like the coops) and size reletive to the mourning dove is small. All North American accipiters eyes darken but it comes with maturity.
