Plot:
In Earth's future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home.

@@benedictcumberbatch4275 It's a safe guess considering he was stranded in space and had to mentally deal with being millions of miles away from home with limited supplies lving in bleak isolation. His options were to betray his mission and the rest of humanity, or he could accept failure and die alone on a foreign and hostile planet. He chose to betray the mission. The only people in human history that could possibly relate to the madness of his situation and the magnitude of the choice he faced, were literally the other people on his original team.

I love how, as Mann starts reciting the poem, you see both Cooper crawling toward the radio and Murph turning her truck around to head back to the house. Each of them were "raging against the dying of the light." He was fighting for his life, and she was turning around for one last ditch attempt at finding a solution to save the world. A brilliant, yet haunting scene.

Seriously, you are just trolling, wanting to be funny or you live in a different world in your mind delusional. If it's the last one, Mann is even talking about how he doesn’t want to hear Cooper die anymore. Mann also threw away Cooper’s communicator (first thing he does) before pushing him over the edge so he wasn’t expecting Cooper to find it. Mann was over confident, and not to mention desperate too, that Cooper would die since they were alone as well. This is where criticism becomes delirious. You could have an issue with Mann throwing the communicator in the direction where he pushed Cooper to. That can be more questionable. Funny that a comment allows to see how a person doesn’t pay attention even when the information is in front of their faces.

I like to pretend that Dr Mann is actually Mark Watney from The Martian and that the latter film is just a prequel to Interstellar, the similar colors of the spacesuit only adds to the imagination. After surviving Mars on his own for so long, Watney/Mann becomes one of Earth's most celebrated astronauts, but decades later with the pending agricultural doom and humanity's extinction he joins the Lazarus Mission. He however underestimated the loneliness and depression that would come with arriving on a planet in a different galaxy with no chance of colonization or survival of life. It makes his deceitful message to the Endurance so much more impactful after his trauma with Mars and then being alone on another inhospitable planet for almost a decade which has a scary massive black crater right in the center.

Poor Roomily man just waited 23 years to get blown up a few hours/days later, don’t see him whining like Mann. The one thing I do like about the betrayal is that it had to happen in order for coop and tars to find and communicate the data in the tesseract. Insinuating how the nature of instinctive “human” actions help the process of evolution even if they seem to be the wrong choices. Coop said in the beginning “we will find a way we always do” and sometimes the wrong choice or bad action can lead to greater outcomes with surviving.

This isn't just something made up for the movie, you see this in our evolutionary history. The Neanderthals were just as intelligent as we, they could understand language and art and technology. But we couldn't just live the way we were. Our insanity, our drive for more and more, it brought us to horrifying nightmares, shadows in the water, many of us fell into the cold embrace of the deep. But we still sought to reach out, to find what was there. Once we learned about the world around us by means of this sailing, this insanity and apparent failure of our species, we effectively crushed the Neanderthals; they couldn't compete with us by means of inferior technology and culture. They weren't as crazy as we are, so they died out.

Years of complete solitude with no hope of rescue, starved of the very nature which makes us human, and tormented with the deliverance from it all by the simple act of forging some numbers, of course, he sent the fabricated data. Coming to terms with devising a lie that would alter the future of humanity, Dr. Mann sought self-justification. So, he put all his efforts into Plan B: to continue the survival of the human race through establishing a colony from the embryos aboard Cooper’s ship on a survivable planet. Dr. Mann’s plan was to get the astronauts to rescue him and then establish the colony on the other planet. That’ll redeem him, right? he had to kill Cooper to escape the planet because he knew Dr. Mann’s data was faked,It’s easy to criticize Dr. Mann, especially with the events following his death as the mothership is destroyed, causing Cooper and Brand to separate. But, can you really blame him? He was a product of his circumstances, pushed by his own human instinct to survive. Isolation from human contact led to madness which led to him committing these crimes, which he convinced himself were necessary to save the human race. Humanity has proven to be adept at this, in convincing itself great evils are necessary at times in order for the greater good. Haven’t we all convinced ourselves that our immoral actions were necessary for a greater good at one point or another, just like Dr. Mann?
