I worked in a state prison and dealt with inmates who ranged from calm and docile to violent and dangerous. The last thing that I wanted to do was use force. But it did happen . But it took quite a bit to get to that point. I had several co workers who always seemed angry at life. They always eventually got fired. One guy was always looking for smaller weaker people; staff or inmates to intimidate. He would back down if someone stood up to him. He was in the segregation unit ( solitary confinement in the movies ) one day when he escorted a inmate back from the hospital. Somehow, he got into a incident with the inmate. The officer put the inmate into a holding cage for several minutes and came back with some help. He unlocked the cage door and talking with the inmate in what appeared to be a heated argument. He started to remove the handcuffs from the inmate. The inmate turned around and after approximately 5 second pause squared off with this officer. The inmate threw the first punch and second and third… you got the idea. It was a 10 second fight which was very one sided. The officer was taken to a outside hospital and the inmate went back to the prison hospital and had his hands in ice for a while. This officer was fired a few days later. The inmate went to his prison disciplinary hearing and was found not guilty because he was defending himself. The other officers were suspended. The first officer was later arrested for this but nothing came from it. I saw the video of this several months later. It just amazes me how stupid people are. When new people started, it was fairly easy to pick the ones who would be there as a career and the ones who should just save the everyone’s time and money and leave. This guy was one who seemed out for revenge against convicted criminals. I tried to talk with him but he started hostile on everything and went from there. I gave up and just hoped that nobody died from his stupidity. I have no idea where he went or what he does now but I sure hope it doesn’t involve having authority over others. I’m telling this because everyone is accountable but it can take longer for some to get what is coming to them.

How come I managed to do that for years even though I was often half the patient's size and strength, but cops get to brutalize anyone at will? Indeed, they are taught how to do it. I was also REQUIRED to maintain a calm, professional demeanor at all times, no matter what was going on. If I didn't, immediate dismissal at the very least. Why not our LE personnel?

You're right. Unfortunately most of their training ends up coming from their first department and all they learn is all the shortcuts and cheats that they use to arrest and convict people. There should be much more in depth training at 'the academy' that lasts much longer so they actually learn(years like any other professional career). Something a 'bit' longer than the training a barber or waste collector gets, And they need to be held accountable individually by a state oversight and not protected by their department, IA dept, or city/county. And any such leadership that does get involved, needs to face their own charges for interference. With no immunity from prosecution and carrying their own insurance which is managed at the state level.
